Sixty Years of International Food Standards: Serving the Transformation of Food Control Systems Globally

Dear Colleagues,

For close to 60 years, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), the international food standard setting body, has developed and adopted science- and evidence-based food safety and quality standards and guidelines to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the international food trade.

Codex has contributed to bringing together 189 members: 188 countries and 1 member organisation, the European Union, with the commitment to work together, following the same principles of risk analysis, relying on documented evidence to develop food standards for the world and embracing the same values of collaboration, inclusiveness, transparency and consensus making. Codex standards, guidelines and codes of practice have proven to be instrumental to guiding the transformation of food control systems at the national, regional and global level. This commemorative Special Issue of Foods will contribute to the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Codex and will discuss the current challenges and priorities faced by various regions around the world in relation to food regulatory development and the needs of evolving food systems regionally and globally. This Special Issue will also focus on some of the efforts that are underway in food regulatory convergence guided by Codex, such as those underway in Africa, with the aim to effectively contribute to human and economic development.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
