Travel Award

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the winner of the Journal of Low Power Electronics and Applications (JLPEA) Travel Award for 2021.

The award has been granted to Mr. Tommaso Zanotti, who is a PhD student at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. Tommaso is working on the development of novel ultra-low-power computing architectures based on emerging non-volatile memory devices for edge computing, combining innovative logic-in-memory approaches with emerging neuro-inspired circuitry. This research field is extremely timely and of utmost importance to provide the key enabling technologies for overcoming the limitations of traditional cloud-based computing infrastructures, still affected by the memory wall and by the heat wall. By developing reliable ultra-low-power computational systems to be deployed at the edge, the full power of the pervasive artificial intelligence revolution will indeed be unleashed. Over the past two years, Tommaso successfully developed an advanced physics-based compact model of resistive memories and employed it to design and develop an innovative ultra-low-power platform for logic-in-memory computation that guarantees vastly superior reliability compared to existing solutions, while simultaneously achieving a remarkable reduction in power consumption of nearly two orders of magnitude. The platform has also recently been extended to support the ultra-low-power execution of the core operations involved in binary neural networks (BNNs), showing high reliability and reduced power consumption in classification tasks.

We would like to thank all the applicants for submitting their diverse and fascinating range of research topics. On behalf of the Editorial Board, we congratulate the winner on his accomplishments.
