Special Issue Information

It is my pleasure to announce this Special Issue on “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Microfluidics Systems” to highlight new advances in this exciting field. I would be delighted if you would contribute a full article, a technical note or a review paper.

With the recent advances of high-throughput and multiplexed microfluidics systems, vast amounts of data will be generated, but not necessarily the ability to analyze complex data effectively. Additionally, design complexity is expected to become significant due to the need for multiple and concurrent assays on the microfluidics system, as well as more sophisticated control mechanisms for resource management. However, conventional design and analysis techniques do not scale well and thus find it difficult to help toward achieving the ultimate goals of high-resolution quality and fast time-to-market. In the past decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, particularly deep learning, have demonstrated remarkable progress for machines to better represent, analyze, and interpret complex data. Recently, AI techniques have successfully been applied and paved a new research direction within the microfluidics community, especially in design automation and experimental analysis aspects.

With this Special Issue, we would like to highlight the benefits but also the challenges in the adoption of this exciting AI technology. The general objective of this Special Issue is to create a focused forum on emerging AI-assisted solutions on microfluidics systems and its applications. Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Antibiotic susceptibility test;
  • Cell counting, detecting, sorting;
  • Cell culturing, genomic, protein analysis, and imaging;
  • Cell microenvironmental interaction;
  • Concentration generation;
  • Cytometry applications;
  • Design automation and test;
  • Droplet analysis, generation;
  • Microorganisms detection, manipulation, and characterization;
  • Neuronal activity detection;
  • Organ-on-a-chip;
  • Polymerase chain reaction applications;
  • Solid phase liquid chromatography.

This Special Issue will act as a catalyst to initiate an exchange of perspectives and brainstorming among the leaders of this area to explore and determine future research directions on how to improve the impact of these technologies on real science.

I look forward to the production of an excellent Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
