Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is defined as "the strategic, transparent integration and achievement of an organization's social, environmental, and economic goals in the systemic coordination of key inter-organizational business processes for improving the long-term economic performance of the individual company and its supply chains." (Carter and Rogers, 2008). Indeed, digital transformation technologies and solutions have been identified in the literature as drivers for companies to achieve SSCM (Teuteberg and Wittstruck, 2010; Junge and Straube, 2020; de Camargo Fiorini and Jabbour, 2017; Thöni and Tjoa, 2017). The usage of digital technologies has led to business process improvement within and between companies. Indeed, digital technologies permit the execution of the business processes for the supply chain effectively and efficiently and help with decision-making. In addition, it can enable new business opportunities by using the data footprint generated by digital technologies. Due to the increase in volume and complexity that businesses face in today's environment and during the COVID pandemic, companies seek to design new digital solutions for improving business processes from all stages of the supply chain to the whole supply chain. This Special Issue encourages submissions that address the design of digital solutions and data usage to improve the  in the supply chain's business processes to achieve the SSCM.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovations in the supply chains to boost sustainability in a data-driven environment.
  • Social–technical aspects of the sustainable supply chain.

Supply chain dynamic capability is becoming an indispensable core competency for organizations. However, it is still unknown how dynamic capability functions during actual use. Based on this reason, this study compiles research on supply chain dynamic capability, proposes the formation mechanism of supply chain dynamic capability, and validates it using data from Chinese companies. The results of structural equation modeling based on a sample of 162 Chinese companies show that environmental turbulence profoundly affects supply chain dynamic capabilities through direct and indirect effects. The dimensions of supply chain synergy have an important mediating effect on the dynamic capability of supply chains. Supply chain flexibility and agility, as the external manifestation of supply chain dynamic capability, are not only influenced by environmental turbulence and supply chain synergy, but also, the supply chain flexibility affects the supply chain agility. Based on these results, the formation mechanism of supply chain dynamic capability was further proposed. Full article

Given the importance of investments in business process improvements for sustainable technologies, many industry sectors are forced to examine and balance new investments with long-term economic viability. There are disputes with regard to the value of investments, particularly within the construction sector, which is characterized by poor capitalization, over-leveraged firms, and high risks, often coupled with business cycles or boom and bust periods. Understanding when construction firms should engage in business process improvements with sustainable technologies is not clear due to the risks and investment costs. To address this problem, the study takes a configurational approach to examine the factors of leverage and use of capital to examine their impact on firm performance with qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). We show distinct configurational outcomes that are associated with superior success, giving construction firms viable pathways to evaluate potential investments in sustainable technologies. Specifically, one configuration, focusing on incremental innovations, consistently produces positive firm performance. Two configurations that lead to the absence of performance are associated with radical innovations in firms that struggle to manage their working capital. Full article
