Cover Story: Another threat on our horizon? A small group of children from the United Kingdom has been reported as having hepatitis that is apparently not explained by common hepatitis viruses. Within days, similar alarms have been rung from other geographic areas. The main worry is that a small minority of these children will progress to end-stage liver failure and require an urgent liver transplant. Although the vast majority of the affected children will probably have a favorable course, we need careful sharing of this information. Whether this is the onset of a novel hepatitis virus or, rather, a limited cluster of “hepatic involvement” of a common virus (possibly a specific adenovirus subtype?) will be clarified by clinical reports provided by specialists during the following weeks and months.
