Cover Story: Many modern epidemiological studies, especially from the USA, have shown a strong causal relationship between cannabis exposure and congenital anomalies (CAs). We found that European nations with high or rising cannabis use had a higher rate of orofacial CAs (FCAs) than elsewhere in that continent. Cannabis was shown to fulfill criteria for causality for orofacial clefts, anotia, congenital cataract, and holoprosencephaly at both bivariate and multivariate analysis after adjustment and also in space-time modelling. Thus, rising cannabis use is associated with many FCAs, fulfils epidemiological criteria for causality and confirms other human and animal research. The data indicate particular concerns relating to brain development and exponential genotoxic dose–responses and urges great caution with regard to community cannabinoid penetration. View this paper
