Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This study is too much theoretical. There is so much text and no relevant mathematical or statistical analysis, which is the basis of modern science. I can’t give a positive score on a pure text research work, which is intended to be published in a respectable journal.

The authors should be more precise, significantly reduce the text of the paper, include relevant and well-explained mathematical or statistical analysis.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This paper analyzes Hongren Village in Kunming, China, through the TPSNT analytical framework to provide some new ideas and insights for exploring the rural transformation model in the practice of urban village transformation beyond the traditional binary linear perspective. If the authors want to publish this paper, they may need to improve the following problems.

1. The abstract is too long, and it is recommended that the authors streamline the content of the abstract, especially the first half of the content. For the conclusion of the study, it is suggested that the authors narrate it in points, which will be more helpful for the readers to read.

2. " Few urban communities in China have their own organisations to govern and manage, and most lack social cohesion and a sense of belonging. Urban villages, on the other hand, have not only retained a strong collective economy but also inherited villagestyle self-organisation and social and cultural traditions that serve important social functions"

Is it "urban communities" or "urban villages" in this sentence, and could the author please explain this clearly because if it is "urban communities" it does not fit the logic of the context. If it is "urban communities", the sentence does not follow the logic of the context. It is also suggested that the author reword the sentence to make it more concise and accurate.

3. " Given that space is a multidimensional and complex system, sociospatial theory needs to more systematically understand the organisation of sociospatial relations that exist in multiple forms to provide an analytical framework that transcends simple dichotomies and can explore the intrinsic mechanisms of rural transformation in depth."

This sentence does not seem to accurately convey what the author is trying to say, and it is recommended that the author reorganize and embellish the language so that the meaning is clear and unambiguous.

4. "As Paniagua notes, rural areas are a new phenomenon within a series of open dimensions or territories, and the study of rural space should Instead, we can view rural space as a product of social relations shaped by the expanding social relations that are unique to rural areas [28]. that are unique to rural areas [28]."

It seems that "rural arers" is not a new phenomenon, does the author want to study "urban villages" or "rural arers". Is the author trying to study "urban villages" or "rural arers"? This literature does not seem to support the author's research, and it is suggested that the author re-read the relevant literature and give the literature that can support the author's research.

5. " However, territory, place, scale and network (TPSN) must be seen as mutually constitutive and intertwined dimensionsof sociospatial relations."

This sentence is not coherent with the preceding and following text, and it is recommended that the writer re-embellish the sentence in order to make the content of his/her essay coherent and logical.

6. From the content of the article, it is clear that the author of this article is studying "urban villages", but in 2.3 it is "villages", so the author should standardize the important terms in the whole article in order to prevent misunderstandings.

7. " The new village shows the typical layout of a modern urban community, and its planning and design show the villagers' proactive integration into the city, even under the urban building standards. "

The language is not smooth, and the author is advised to re-touch it.

8. There is incorrect use of punctuation in the article. It is recommended that the author recheck the formatting of the article and the use of punctuation, especially in section 4.3.2.

9. In 4.1.1, the author says that 670 acres of land have been expropriated in Hongren Village, but in 4.5, he says that 960 acres of land have been expropriated, which is inconsistent, so please give the author a reasonable explanation. If there is a misunderstanding, please correct it.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This article offers a significant contribution to our understanding of rural self-organizing resilience within the context of China's urbanization. The authors adeptly utilize the TPSN analytical framework to dissect the intricate construction of social spaces amid urban-rural transformations. By focusing on four conceptual dimensions and seamlessly integrating these into the broader TPSNT framework, the study effectively moves beyond the predominant focus on physical space transformations that characterize much of the existing literature on rural transformation. This approach not only enriches academic discourse but also provides novel insights and inspiration for rethinking rural transformation models and the transformation practices of urban villages.

Overall, this article is highly suitable for the theme of the Special Issue "Sustainable Rural Resiliencies: Challenges, Resistances, and Pathways" in the journal Sustainability by employing the TPSNT framework to explore complex social space constructions and avoiding an overly simplistic focus on physical transformations, the article enriches our understanding of sustainable rural resiliencies. This perspective is essential for the Special Issue as it seeks to broaden the discourse around the sustainability challenges, resistance mechanisms, and development pathways in rural settings.

Foremost, it is important to emphasize that the article is well-structured, the arguments are very clearly presented, and are logically connected with the aim posed at the beginning of the article.

I would also like to acknowledge and appreciate the description of the conceptual framework based on the five dimensions.

(1)I suggest to put the Discussion section before the conclusion.

(2)I suggest to delete the white annotation in the upper right corner of Figure 6, which will make the picture more beautiful.

(3)What are the limits of the research? Research limitations and constraints should be presented in the conclusions section.

(4)In Section 2.3, it’s about the research framework, the authors construct an integrated analytical framework and to form a frame diagram that clearly demonstrates the relationship between the content and methods of the study. This is great, but I have a small suggestion. I hope the author can adjust the content of paragraphs 330-353 to make it clearer and more fit into the description of the framework.

(5)The literature is quite outdated, I suggest adding some updated literature.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

China's urban villages have been the subject of extensive research and policy reviews. These villages, which have been interpreted in various ways, are undergoing significant transformations due to rapid urbanization.

The article presents the efforts of local social organizations to defend the territories targeted by the government's investment activities in Hongren Village in Kunming City, China.

The introduction and study of the specialized literature are adequate and present all the information necessary to understand the article's subject.

Regarding the research methodology (subchapter 3.2), I believe that it would be necessary to complete it. There are no references to the information, no mention of the interview methodology, the types of interviews, the calibration of the interviews, or the differences between the interviews and material obtained from other sources. In the framework of qualitative research, these aspects, from my point of view, are very important to specify.

Figures are not cited in the text.

Discussions should be followed by conclusions
