Cover Story: Exercise programs that aim to improve hamstring muscle function often include spinal muscle exercises and vice versa. This potential linkage between the hamstrings and spinal muscle may have a mechanical or neural origin. In this article, we used shear wave elastography and electromyography and found that during passive stretches and mild contractions of the hamstrings, the stiffness of the hamstrings and the erector spinae and multifidus muscles are inter-related. Paraspinal muscle stiffness can be modulated through specific hamstring exercises, which is relevant for designing rehabilitation programs for patients with low back pain. Future research could also examine whether spinal exercises influence hamstring stiffness, which is important for the prevention or rehabilitation of hamstring injuries. View this paper
