Cover Story: Advances in technology are transforming production lifestyles and work. As connectivity, mobile phone access, and digital applications spread, challenges arise for the future of work. Gig work covers many industries and occupations and involves the allocation of work in parcels of small tasks (gigs) through digital platforms. Gig work encompasses many activities, including data entry, professional services, transport, and food delivery. Sub-Saharan Africa faces significant development challenges. We discuss the potential for gig work to contribute to sustainable development goals, such as creating more jobs, providing jobs for women, and providing decent working conditions and training opportunities. We consider the potential of gig work to make a positive difference to the region. View this paper
