Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The figure 1 is diffucullt to read. It is mixed of brown, red and black

The legend in fig.5d must be improved - It is to small

Author Response

Dear Reviewer,

We are grateful for your precious time spent on our manuscript entitled “Stress-Strain-Strength Characteristics of Undisturbed Granite Residual Soil Considering Different Patterns of Variation of Mean Effective Stress” (applsci-1098763).  Your suggestions are valuable and very helpful for revising and improving our paper. We have revised the paper according to your suggestions, the revisions are as follows:

The figure 1 is difficult to read. It is mixed of brown, red and black

Response: Many thanks for your advice and we are sorry for this defect. We have redrawn figure 1 by changing the background-color. Modified figure has been inserted into the revised paper.

The legend in fig.5d must be improved - It is to small

Response: Thanks a lot for your suggestion and we are sorry for this defect. We have redrawn figure 5d. Modified figure has been inserted into the revised paper.

Once again, thank you very much for your careful review of our paper.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear authors,

your paper is very well written, well organized, and the methodology is very thorough. It is necessary to make a minor correction in it. In line 59, the name of Figure 1 needs to be changed. Eg. the first sentence should be deleted.

I wish you all the best!

Round 2

Reviewer 3 Report

Authors have followed the suggested improvement, and most of the difficulties are solved.

For further improvement:

editorial - Fig. 5d stress paths should be of the same colours of the corresponding stress-strain plots;

technical - the revision at rows 248-254 should be slightly rephrased as it  is more addressing the model than the soil behaviour ; indeed is the soil, not the model, that is showing irreversible response such that it cannot be represented by simple linear elasticity;

Author Response

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions concerning our manuscript entitled “Stress-Strain-Strength Characteristics of Undisturbed Granite Residual Soil Considering Different Patterns of Variation of Mean Effective Stress” (applsci-1098763), your comments and suggestions are important and helpful for improving our paper. We have revised the paper according to your comments and suggestions, the revisions are as follows:

editorial - Fig. 5d stress paths should be of the same colours of the corresponding stress-strain plots

Responses: Many thanks for your careful review of our paper. We have redrawn Fig 5d and changed the colours. Please check it in Line 217.

technical - the revision at rows 248-254 should be slightly rephrased as it is more addressing the model than the soil behaviour; indeed is the soil, not the model, that is showing irreversible response such that it cannot be represented by simple linear elasticity

Responses: Thank you very much for your suggestion. We totally agree with you and admire your logical mind. We have rephrased that part as “Since the mean effective stress remains unchanged when α=90°, only the increment of deviator stress is responsible for the considerable volumetric strains developed, a large proportion of which is irreversible. In other words, deformation of the soil is the result of the coupled effects of mean effective stress and deviator stress, the UGRS shows a coupled and irreversible response, which cannot be represented by uncoupled models such as the simple linear elasticity, to stress path testing.”, which can be seen in Line 247 to 253.

Once again, thank you very much for your suggestions and comments.

Best regards,

Yours sincerely,
