Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report (New Reviewer)

Dear Authors,

You have written a paper with the main focus of selected variables on different ambient temperatures. The methods section is extremely poorly written and the introduction does not present the main rationale well.

Several parts need to be addressed for greater clarity.

Abstract:

Lines 19-23 have no relevance to the main aim and should be deleted.

Also, the next sentence in lines 24-25 does not present the correct ai of your study as described at the end of the introduction. Amend

Report p values.

The conclusion of your study is poor - what are the real practical applications connected to abient temperature - this is the main focus. Nothing is mentioned. Amend

Introduction

The main focus is judo. Therefore amend the first sentence to focus on judo and delete references related to other sports.

The sentence in lines 49-51 needs to be backed up by a reference.

The sentence in lines 59-60 regarding the thermal conditions needs to be backed up by references and how is this important for judo. Amend

Sentence in lines 92-96 has no references and is more of an opinion rather then based on research. Please add references. The IJF competitions are held in tournament halls with AC systems that maintain the ambient temperature so from this point your study's main rationale is very poor.  Try to back up this.

I would suggest focusing on training and training caps, especially in summer when athletes train in highly humid and high-temperature environments. This is where your study could come into practice. Especially when connected to the next sentences when you talk about dehydration. One of the late studies (DOI: 10.1177/17479541221122433) reported that elite athletes are Hypohydration even during a weight-stable training camp. Connecting these facts with additional dehydration-sweating would give you a solid foundation for your rationale and research in environment temperature.

The sentence in lines 96-97 has references that do not research thermal factor influence related to a judo fight. Therefore amend the sentence and references.

Line 108 - delete the .

Methods

Line 116 / age and training experience - what was the minimum to be included in the study? report

Line 118 - what happened to the 5 that did not complete all tests and why? Report. Also, change the sammple size to 10 in the abstract as it is misleading in this way.

Line 125 - which medical personnel (it can be a doctor, nurse,...)? report

Report athlete's weight categories and belt degree levels.

How were body height and body weight emasured? Report

What were the instructions to athletes 1 day before the body composition - bioimpedance measurements? If certain procedures are not followed this can have great effects on results and should be mentioned in the limitations section.

Line 158 - report the model of the BP monitor?

Report HR monitor

Line 180 - Why a load of 8.3% - how much judo research was done with this load so you can compare the data? Elaborate

The same for the upper body of 4.5%?

What ergometer was used?

Why did you do Wingate and aerobic test on the same day? Elaborate and back up by research

Report all models of equipment used!

References for aerobic protocols are misisng? How was upper body aerobic testing done? Report

The stages done are very unclear and confusing. I recommend adding a figure with clear stages and tests performed to be inserted for greater clarity.

How did you select participants for aerobic testing groups - was it randomly?

What was the model of the environment chamber?

The method section is confusing and should be divided into the general descriptions of stages and later the description of all tests and applied. Please divide them into subsections.

What was your level of significance? report

Why didn't you measure body core temperature? This is one of the important factors in studies that examine the effects of environmental temperature. Elaborate and add as a limitation

Discussion

The first paragraph should explain the main aim and finding of your study in non-statistical terms. Please amend

The discussion mainly just states the results of temperature and does not discuss the physiological parameters behind and what could influence them and how this could be applicable to judo training or combat.

Line 538 - ''offers an opportunity for an optimal'' really? in what way. How is your study applicable to coaches? Will they train at higher temperatures? This is a conclusion without any basis. Rewrite.

Practical application at the end does not tell anything to a coach.

In general a dataset with potential, unfortunately, the authors still need to invest more time in making this study clearer to understand and to show how is this research adding to the field of judo. Also, the methods section needs an immense upgrade as it is hard to read and confusing. Also, an English proofread is needed.

Therefore I recommend a major revision.

Reviewer 2 Report (New Reviewer)

Selected indices of anaerobic capacity and their changes in special judo fitness tests in judo athletes at different ambient temperatures

Abstract

Line 29: Temperature is mentioned for the first time here but isn’t mentioned in the first few lines around why it would impact judo performance or is part of a needs analysis for judo

Line 32: No mention of statistical analysis to educate the reader on how the differences in the following sentence are derived. A sentence on how the differences between conditions were analysed would be best here including an alpha level of significance

Line 32: Differences between groups can exist even if they are not significantly different based on your analysis method. I would make this clear in the abstract about whether the differences are significant and/or the magnitude of the differences using effect sizes or similar.

Line 37, conclusions: specific conclusions are required here which tell the reader what this means for judo athletes, rather than saying that the results obtained can be applied, because my first question is how is this applied?

Introduction

Good introduction that provides background arguments to why the study is being done. The temperature element is briefly mentioned which is good but this wasn’t clear in the abstract so I’m glad it’s here. No major issues here for me.

Methods

Unfortunately the methodology is described in a confusing way which made me feel like that I needed to confirm multiple times around what the study was actually implementing.

Line 114: what specifically does a ‘good’ health status mean in this context?

Line 114-5: If a sample size was determined before the study began, how did this specifically occur?

Line 115-6: Inclusion and exclusion criteria needs to be explicitly described. The one that is defined well is the training experience criteria which has a clear cut-off of 10 years. So these rules need to be described clearly so the reader knows exactly what your criteria were for participants. I would say only the inclusion OR the exclusion criteria is required. I like adding in exclusion criteria which tells the reader that if they don’t meet one or more of the exclusion criteria, they are included in the study. Criteria that needs to be described better is the health status criterion and chronological age which is not mentioned in table 1 at all so I don’t know what the specific criteria is for chronological age.

Line 138: mention of circadian rhythms here without a citation surrounding the evidence behind why tests were performed in the morning due to circadian rhythms.

Line 142: I would also report the mean and SD age of the participants that completed the testing like you have done with other anthropometric variables.

Line 154: It seems like BMI was an inclusion criteria for the study based on the wording “normal range accepted”. This will need to be added to the inclusion criteria if this is true.

Line 157: Is the body composition analyzer valid and reliable in the research? What was the specific protocol used to collect this data, e.g. were subjects fasted prior to estimating body composition as the value is impacted by fasted state. I guess I don’t have enough information if I wanted to replicate

Line 175: citation for the Wingate test seems to be in the wrong spot.

Line 179: “…performed a 30-second maximal physical exercise” hits the ear wrong from an English perspective. I would say “…performed a 30-second maximal effort”. Also provide a comment on whether the effort was paced throughout as a traditional Wingate should not be paced with strong verbal encouragement throughout.

Line 181: was there a reason why the different external loads were used for the Wingate?

Line 192: I’m not sure what the (DE) means in this context?

Line 193: double period after “60”.

Line 195-196: double use of “performed”, I would keep the first mention of “performed” and delete the second.

Line 210: “where” should be changed to “were”.

Line 211: 5-min

Line 251: Change “Tuckey” to “Tukey”

Line 253: Add in the alpha level of significance here as <0.05 or <0.1 or whatever you used.

Results:

Line 275: “and” instead of “asnd”

Figure 1: The green and red datasets has the degrees symbol as a zero instead of a superscripted circle

Lines 286-7, 291-293: temperature units aren’t correctly formatted like the rest of the manuscript

Figures 2 and 3: All degree symbols appear to be zeros.

Discussion

The first paragraph should summarise the findings of the research before going into explaining the findings. Without it, it reads as if there is no significant finding of the study.

Unfortunately there is no discussion of the results of the study with very few direct references to the results. When the results of the study are directly presented, they are not discussed, rather the results of the study are repeated like in the results section. This is clear in lines 469-476. Lines 477-480 do a better job of applying the findings of the study to the wider literature.

Conclusions look to be unfinished

Practical implications don’t provide a specific practical application to assist coaches or scientists in utilising the results of this data. It also looks unfinished.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report (New Reviewer)

Dear Authors,

Thank you for addressing the majority of suggestions. The quality of the paper improved. However, the paper urgently needs Extensive English editing as some parts of the text are hard to read and understand. It would be a pity if the essence of the text would be lost because of the poor language.

Limitations of the study - The word ''core'' needs to be added as ''body core temperature''

Therefore I recommend acceptance after minor revision.

Kind regards

Reviewer 2 Report

General comments The study investigated the changes that different ambient temperatures could induced on anaerobic total work and on relative peak power during a special judo fitness test. The study could be rather interesting, however, it needs a great re-organization to allow the reader to follow and to understand the manuscript. It is very confused. As clarified by the specific comments below, many points should be addressed more extensively. Specific comments Improve the scientific English for clarity. Abstract Lines 37-38. Authors should indicate the practical applications of the study. Introduction Authors should better explain the rationale of the study. It is not clear. Material and Methods In general, the explanation of the protocol was very confused and not so clear to understand and replicate. Authors should better explained the protocol and the measures that were conducted for the study. Lines 114-116. Authors should specify the inclusion criteria. Authors should substitute biometric indices with anthropometric variables. Moreover, how anthropometric indices were calculated? Please, include their description in this section instead of in the Measurement technique section. Line 157. Individually selected intensity of 50% Vo2max2max???????? Moreover, I think that if exercise intensity was established in relation to subject’s VO2max, Authors firstly evaluated aerobic capacity (VO2max) and therefore they established the exercise intensity. Please, clarify it. Lines 162-163. How phosphagen and glycolytic components were assessed? Lines 166-172. Please, better explained the protocol and the measures that were conducted for the study. How many days passed between the STAGES II and III and the STAGES IV and V? Table 1. What NNLL means? Please, clarify. Lines 203-227. Measurement technique section. I suggest to the Authors to include the measurement techniques description within the previous sections of the manuscript, as already suggested for the anthropometric measurements.

Lines 230-231. … … the arithmetic mean ( ) and standard deviation (SD). ( ) ???????

Results

Table 2. ^ significant differences at p<0.05 level, between temperatures of 21°C and 31°C, separately for each measurement. What it refers to? Please, clarify.

Figure 1. ^ - significant differences at p<0.05, between temperatures of 21°C and 31°C, separately in each measurement. What it refers to? Please, clarify. What does the acronym AA mean? Please, write in English language the label of the horizontal (x) axis. The label of the figure is not exhaustive.

Figures 2-5. Please, see comments for Figure 1.

Lines 312-315. Please, rephrase this sentence.

Tables. Tables should be self-explanatory. Please, modify the tables in order to allow the reader to understand the contents of the table without referring to the text.

There is not a fully correspondence between the measurements conducted and the reported results.

Discussion

Lines 347-349. It is not clear how the results of the study supported this sentence.

Authors should indicate and discuss what are the practical applications of the study.

Authors should add a limitations section.

General comments by reviewer

This study investigated the physical performances in Judo athletes. I think this kind of study is required for the sports science fields. However, this manuscript needs to revise to clarify the background and discussion sections. The most of contents have too many information and do not stand out your critical points. So, I highly recommend to reduce the repeated and additional contents to improve the readability. The specific comments are as follows:

Specific comments by reviewer

Abstract section

Line 34: Please check the unit.

Introduction section

The introduction section includes valid background information. However, the introduction should provide simple and clear contents as possible. So, I highly recommend reduce the contents short length as possible. Because it provides detailed information, and I think just focus on the contents similar with your study, such as competitive sports (e.g., boxing, judo, taekwondo, kick boxing, MMA, etc).

Lines 60-64: Please rephrase these sentences for the fluency.

Lines 101-111: Please summarize the trends of the current studies, and describe the gaps which is unclear. This process can emphasize the necessary of your study.

Besides, I recommend adding the hypotheses of this study at the end of the introduction section.

Methods section

Please provide how to calculate the sample size in this study.

Line 132: I highly recommend adding a flow-chart to describe your all of the process for the recruitment.

All tables: Please add the legends of the abbreviations for all tables at below.

Lines 195-197: Please describes the details how to calculate the variables.

Results section

All of the figures resolution is not clear. Also, the font size is relatively small. Please check and revise the all of the figures in this manuscript.

Discussion section

It is similar with the above my comments, the discussion section is also reduced the contents. Please reduce the repeated contents and clarify to critical results.

Besides, please lead you flow based on your significant results in this study. I feel that the construction of the paragraphs in the discussion are not organazed. And I highly recommend add the strengthes and limitations in this study at the end of the discussion section.
