Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

To increase the diversification and improve the coatability, the ideal flux composition in Zn–Mg–Al ternary alloy coatings was optimized by adding SnCl2 in this study. This is an interesting paper with informative results; thus, it could be accepted pending minor revision:

1. The keyword “Hot-dip coating” should be changed to “Hot-dip galvanized coating”

2. In Figure 2, icon “(c)” should be removed.

3. More detailed information is required for the schematic diagrams shown in Figure 7.

Dear author

I believe that you have made a good work but it can be improved. The introduction doesn't specify the hypothesis and objectives of the study. The results showed on Fig.1 must be improved, the TGA and DTA (Fig. 6) should be simplified with less information inside them, and Fig. 7 should be more clear since it is not understandable for all the readers. Additionally, the conclusions shouldn't be presented as a list.

I would like to receive an improved manuscript, more stimulating and with novelty to confirm the significance of the publication and the interest to the readers.

Thank you for the opportunity given in reading your work.

Reviewer 3 Report

In this manuscript, the authors examined the impact of the conventional flux (ZnCl2:NH4Cl) on hot-dip galvanization, and subsequently developed a new flux that enhanced the coating properties of Zn–Mg–Al ternary alloy coatings on steel sheets. The quality of the coating is influenced by the surface preparation techniques used and the selection of an appropriate flux for the particular alloy composition, found that 30 wt.% SnCl2 fostered the best coating surface quality. I believe this manuscript is ready for publication due to the thorough experimental results presented. I have following comments:

1. Most of experimental results compared between NF and SF30, it would be great if can add comparison between more SF values.

2. It would be more complete if authors can provide a detailed explanation why SF value more than 30 has a negative impact.
