The manuscript mainly contributes in two aspects considering both the transition of foreign resident cohorts and the spatial distribution. It can be further improved especially the discussion part, highlighting the importance or novelty of the findings.

Dear authors,

Thank you very much for this interesting topic article and well-researched manuscript.

Content wise I the article is sound. I have just spotted two small typos:

The second status of residence is not clear on P2:
"In 2019, the statuses of residence as Specified Skilled Worker (i) and as Specified Skilled Worker (ii) were established for the acceptance of work-ready foreign nationals who had a certain degree of expertise and skills in the industrial fields to secure domestic human resources [4]"

P3, year 2019 is mentioned 3 times in the same line:
"Novel coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic in 2019, also affects international migration of Japan".

P3:
"In conventional studies, the acceptance of foreign residents and workforce in Japan was discussed social aspects such as living condition, cultural influences, social  interaction of Japanese society"

Please eliminate "was"

Comment 1. The second status of residence is not clear on P2:

"In 2019, the statuses of residence as Specified Skilled Worker (i) and as Specified Skilled Worker (ii) were established for the acceptance of work-ready foreign nationals who had a certain degree of expertise and skills in the industrial fields to secure domestic human resources [4]".

Reply 1. According to the comment, we inserted the detail explanation of Specified Skilled Worker (i) and Specified Skilled Worker (ii) in P2, Lines 69-72 and P3, Lines 75-79.

Comment 2. P3, year 2019 is mentioned 3 times in the same line:

"Novel coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic in 2019, also affects international migration of Japan".

Reply 2. We corrected the “Novel coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic in 2019” into “Novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic” in P3, Line 85.

Comment 3. P3:

"In conventional studies, the acceptance of foreign residents and workforce in Japan was discussed social aspects such as living condition, cultural influences, social  interaction of Japanese society."

Please eliminate "was".

Reply 3. We eliminated “was” according to the comment in P4, Line 130.

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

Authors made a significant improvement compared to the original version based on reviewers' comments. Some changes are needed to make and more illustrations are needed to provide in the current version.
