Cover Story: Performing multiple tasks in parallel results in a cost on performance that is thought to increase with age. In this study, we tested 252 healthy adults aged 50–89 years with a visual memory task performed both in isolation and in conjunction with a sustained attention task at two levels of difficulty. The results showed that overall performance decreased linearly with age while, unexpectedly, dual tasking costs remained stable with increasing age. Finally, using a cluster-based approach, we found that participants who paid the highest dual-tasking costs also showed significantly lower scores than peers in a self-administered cognitive screening. Testing with concurrent tasks seems a promising option for detecting abnormal performance that might anticipate aging-related cognitive decline. View this paper
