Cover Story: Here, we provide an overview of Earth observation and remote sensing in archaeology following a non-traditional literature review approach, investigating recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and specifically with the ChatGPT language model. Innovations and limitations are discussed, while a comparison with traditional bibliographic analysis is performed. ChatGPT provided apparently satisfactory replies but lacked any exhaustive analysis compared to traditional literature review methods. Limitations concern the lack of transparency for the model’s sources and the exclusion of new developments. These limitations and ethical aspects do not allow it to become an alternative to the traditional literature review method. Nevertheless, as ChatGPT was only recently released in a beta version, improvements should be expected in the near future. View this paper
