Cover Story: The design of flexible and efficient propulsion systems is crucial for the development of future low-emission aircraft. Applying shape-adaptive blades in jet engine compressors presents a high potential for increasing efficiency, since such blades are capable of adapting to different flight phases and aerodynamic conditions. Such blade morphing behavior can be achieved through structurally integrated actuation. Since no morphing aircraft engine blades exist to date, a multidisciplinary method for their design is introduced. This new method brings together existing structural and aerodynamic design methodologies, couples them already at the earliest stages of the design process, and addresses the challenges of such a tightly coupled multidisciplinary design approach. View this paper
