Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Since their discovery, the use of antibiotics has been the best way to fight infections and treat certain diseases. Antibiotics are certainly among the most frequently prescribed drugs in dentistry. The correct use of antibiotics in dentistry is essential to prevent infections and reduce the risk of bacterial resistance. The most frequent case that leads to the prescription of a systemic antibiotic in dentistry is related to the presence of acute pain and swelling in the oral cavity. Furthermore, antibiotic therapy can also be used prophylactically in patients with heart lesions or in patients who have undergone transplantation of solid organs (kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, or intestines) or those who have undergone prosthetic surgery on a joint.
Topical antibiotics are an essential part of modern medicine. The choice of topical antibiotic depends on a number of positive characteristics that make it possible to avoid the drawbacks of systemic antimicrobial administration. With the application of a topical antibiotic, the patient’s symptoms and clinical signs can be resolved within a few hours, and it is very easy for the clinician to apply.
This Special Issue aims to gather new knowledge on the use of systemic and topical antibiotics in dentistry.
