Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Novel and emerging technologies in food packaging are a trending area of research to boost food quality and safety in recent years. Packaging that is both environmentally friendly and edible is becoming more popular. To reduce waste and keep food fresh, edible packaging uses biodegradable materials that are applied as a consumable coating or wrapping around the food. Various recent studies have examined the value of edible components as an additional benefit to packaged foods. Nanotechnology is increasingly looking like a potential area to use bioactives, antimicrobials, vitamins, and antioxidants to produce edible packaging more useful, so it can be promoted as a component of edible and green coatings and films such as nanofibers, nanocapsules, nanoparticles, and nanoemulsions.
An active packaging system plays an important part in packaged foods by engaging with the food, such as releasing antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds and attempting to remove harmful gases such as oxygen and water vapor, preventing as a result the reduction in food quality and shelf life. Additionally, the nutritional profile of packaged foods can also be preserved through the use of active packaging.
Smart/Intelligent packaging should be able to sense or measure the characteristics of products, the inside condition of a package, or the transportation environment. Microelectronics, computers, and nanotechnology are all examples of advanced packaging systems that utilize such terminology. Intelligent packaging systems are described in three main aspects: barcode systems designed mainly for storage, delivery, and traceability; the use of indicators in the food supply chain that deliver qualitative data on quantities collected in real time; and sensors for the measurement of analytes for the evaluation of food quality and package integrity.
Novel technological advances in food packaging will provide an active role in future applications to preserve foods.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
