Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and often disabling disease of the central nervous system. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, more than 2.8 million people are living with MS.

MRI plays a key role in the diagnosis and monitoring of this disease. Advanced neuroimaging techniques can provide essential information on the structural, functional or metabolic changes occurring in MS patients. The new MRI scanners are now equipped with advanced sequences. Thus, the correct use of the advanced sequences and the understanding of the advanced techniques information assume an increasingly important role in multiple sclerosis.

This Special Issue will focus on the advancements and practical utility of advanced magnetic resonance imaging in the management of MS patients. We welcome high-quality original studies, meta-analyses and reviews addressing relevant aspects of the aforementioned topic.

Brain and spinal cord imaging plays a pivotal role in aiding clinicians with the diagnosis and monitoring of multiple sclerosis. Nevertheless, the significance of magnetic resonance imaging in MS extends beyond its clinical utility. Advanced imaging modalities have facilitated the in vivo detection of various components of MS pathogenesis, and, in recent years, MRI biomarkers have been utilized to assess the response of patients with relapsing–remitting MS to the available treatments. Similarly, MRI indicators of neurodegeneration demonstrate potential as primary and secondary endpoints in clinical trials targeting progressive phenotypes. This review aims to provide an overview of the latest advancements in brain and spinal cord neuroimaging in MS. Full article
