Dear Colleagues,

Energy production will play a key role as countries strive to enhance their economic growth. However, this pursuit of growth has come at a substantial environmental cost. Energy production, mainly from fossil fuels, has increased greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to air and water pollution, climate change, and ecological degradation. These unintended environmental consequences have emerged as a critical challenge that demands immediate attention. The effects have become increasingly significant barriers to achieving sustainable economic development. Sustainable development seeks to balance economic growth and environmental preservation and social well-being. However, mounting environmental challenges pose substantial obstacles to achieving this goal. They disrupt ecosystems, endanger public health, and exacerbate social inequalities. The rapid pace of urbanization and industrialization worldwide has exacerbated this predicament. In particular, urban areas contribute to high energy consumption and emissions and lead to localized environmental challenges, such as air pollution and habitat loss.

While driving economic growth, industrialization stresses natural resources and ecosystems. Therefore, these global trends have amplified the need for urgent action. Energy consumption has evolved into a cornerstone of modern economic growth. Industries, transportation, and households heavily rely on energy sources to function. Consequently, the relationship between fossil fuel-based energy consumption and economic development has grown stronger, making it vital to thoughtfully address this connection. Achieving a harmonious equilibrium between economic growth and environmental preservation is a formidable challenge. It requires policies and strategies that decouple economic development from resource-intensive practices. However, internal contradictions driven by short-term economic, rather than long-term sustainability, goals often hinder progress.

In response to these challenges, efforts are underway to transition toward a more sustainable and environmentally responsible energy system. This transition includes shifting from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and implementing cleaner technologies. The goal is to reach carbon neutrality, where net greenhouse gases emissions are reduced to zero, by 2050. In sum, the intertwined issues of energy production, economic growth, and environmental impact are complex and pressing. Achieving sustainable economic development in the face of these challenges requires comprehensive and coordinated efforts, with a focus on transitioning to cleaner energy sources and reducing carbon emissions to combat climate change.

This Special Issue aims to collect theoretical and empirical papers focusing on the challenges surrounding green growth and energy consumption, with particular attention given to the energy transition. It will also encourage researchers worldwide to collaborate to develop more multifaceted research in this field.

Areas discussed in this Special Issue will include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Energy transition;
  • The nexus between economic development and renewable generation;
  • Government policies to support energy transition;
  • Carbon neutrality;
  • Social effects of the energy transition.

Articles selected for this Special Issue, titled “New Challenges in Economic Development and Energy Policy”, will be subject to a double-blind peer-review procedure to enable the rapid and wide dissemination of relevant research results.

The global energy transition is an uneven process, fundamentally related to the level of economic development of countries and their access to energy resources (renewable and non-renewable) to a large extent. The global climate is interconnected, and all nations impact it through their products and services. The six countries discussed—China, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Russia, and India—account for 44.8% of global primary energy consumption and 49% of global CO2 emissions. Each of them has its own strategy for achieving carbon neutrality, based on different decarbonization scenarios, which, according to the authors, depend on geopolitical factors, national economy characteristics, and the established pragmatic goals and objectives. However, the “green agenda” itself may not always be among the top priorities when formulating energy strategies. The study objective is to analyze the feasibility of the stated goals in these countries using a combined logistic curve-based forecasting tool for predicting solar and wind production as well as investment volumes. It aims to justify the relation between solar and wind energy production and investment policies using a calculated technological coefficient. Results show similar, but time-shifted fluctuating investment dynamics in solar and wind energy trends in Japan, Germany and China, with Germany and Japan outperforming investment forecasts when considering the technology efficiency coefficient. Furthermore, the findings highlight the overwhelming appreciation of the unevenness of the green transition process, which will consequently make it impossible to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement until 2050. Taking these factors into consideration, exploratory decarbonization scenarios for these six major world economies alongside two dimensions, namely, the pace of green transition versus green technology and versus resources, are presented. The ongoing electrification of the transport sector is expected to cause an increase in electricity demand and, therefore, trigger significant network investments to accommodate it. This paper focuses on investment decision-making for electricity distribution grids and specifically on the strategic and incremental investment network planning approaches. In particular, the former involves network planning with the consideration of a long-term multi-stage study horizon, as opposed to a shorter–term view of the future that applies to the latter case. An investment analysis that is carried out underlines the economic savings generated from adopting a strategic investment perspective over an incremental one. These economic savings are achieved from the fact that the associated fixed investment costs are incurred only once in the horizon under strategic planning. On the other hand, incremental planning involves a series of network reinforcement decisions, thereby incurring the fixed cost multiple times. In addition, sensitivity analyses that are carried out capture the effect of key parameters, such as investment cost, discount rate and investment delay, on the generated economic savings. This paper investigates whether renewable energy influences economic growth and happiness. Using panel data from 25 European Union countries for the period 2012–2022, this study employs a panel model for estimation with fixed and random effects, and robust HAC standard errors. According to the research results, in general, the growing share of renewable energy in the energy mix has a positive impact on economic growth and the happiness of citizens. However, detailed research has shown that this effect depends on the type of energy; a significant positive impact was recorded only in solar share energy, wind share energy and economic growth. However, almost all types of renewable energy were included, i.e., biofuel, hydro, solar and other renewable share energy, and all had a significantly positive impact on the level of happiness. The exception was wind share energy, which showed a significant negative impact. The research findings of this paper provide empirical support for promoting renewable energy, which is positive both for economies and the happiness of citizens. It is one of the main aspects of sustainable economic growth. Full article

The impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating in many countries, increasing household energy poverty. Lockdown measures have brought the EU economies into recession phases and forced people to stay confined to their homes, aggravating these issues. From the second half of 2021, when the worst seemed behind us, a new threat has appeared threatening economic recovery: the inflationary process in energy prices. This paper aims to verify the effects on energy poverty in European countries following the economic crisis generated by COVID-19 and the current inflationary scenario due to the increase in energy commodity prices through dynamic factor models, estimating the time it will take for energy poverty to return to levels before the shocks that occurred over the past two years. The outcomes show that the overall rise in energy prices (in particular gas) that unexpectedly affected European countries modifies the forecast scenarios, delaying, at best, the first improvements, initially expected as early as 2021, until after 2022.
