Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Industrial concepts that are called “forest biorefineries” offer value to products derived from biomass produced in forests. The basic principle of biorefineries is the application of a refining process that yields biofibers, biochemicals, biomaterials, and biofuels, in an approach that is considered rational and sustainable. This Special Issue, entitled “Integrated Forest Products Biorefinery Perspectives”, will address concepts related to process design, residual materials utilization, products from biorefinery systems, and technology-driven biorefinery processes. Controlled biomass component isolation using chemical or thermochemical methodologies will also be covered by this issue. The main function of forest biorefineries is the synthesis of chemicals coming from the isolation products, hemicelluloses, cellulose, lignin, extractives, ash, and advanced fiber products. This issue will also address topics including the recovery of the highest possible exploitation of the whole feedstock, residual, or raw material, as well as added-value products from side streams of forest-based companies.
We aspire to gather studies that showcase novel biorefining strategies, including of course the already-established pulp and paper biorefineries. Topics related to the complexity and challenges faced by forest biorefineries based on sustainable production are of particular interest to us.
It will be our great pleasure to offer additional information and facilitate the highlighting of your work in relevant topics.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
