Dear Colleagues,
Advances in omics technology result in data-rich insights into microbiomes. We are on the cusp of moving from what organisms are present in a community to understanding how microbiomes function. Their functions include the production of energy and metabolomes, degradation and repurposing of structural materials and biopolymers, and interspecific and intraspecific communication at microbial and metazoan levels that result in a community behaving more like a coordinated complex individual than a collection of free-living opportunistic individuals. There is significant research on each sub-topic, and each sub-topic is a rapidly progressing frontier. This Special Issue welcomes reports that target understanding marine communities from the perspective of their biological functions.
