Mechanism of Premature Rupture of Fetal Membranes

Dear Colleagues,

The premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) is one of the great obstetrical syndromes; it is a major worldwide contributor to preterm birth and it is associated with multiple maternal and neonatal complications. PROM is a pathological condition in which the spontaneous rupture of the chorioamniotic membranes occurs prior to the the initiation of labor. No preventive or therapeutic measures or early diagnostic tools are available for this disease, which makes evident that the etiology and physiopathogenic mechanisms explaining PROM remain poorly known.

For this Special Issue, we welcome research groups interested in any aspect of the biology of the fetal membranes that can be applied in order to improve knowledge regarding the mechanisms of PROM. Biomedical approaches using molecular, cellular or tisular experimental models or translational clinical studies with a biomedical method, as well as systematic reviews on topics relating to the mechanisms of PROM, are welcomed. Although intrauterine infection has been suggested as a cause of PROM, studies analyzing molecular mechanisms linking infection with PROM is an area of great interest.
