Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Traditional 2D cell culture and animal models, while valuable, often fall short in replicating the human tissue microenvironment. It is also true that as science evolves, the ethical and regulatory scrutiny of animal use in research increases. Many countries are now actively enforcing the extended view 3R’s of animal experimentation—replacement, reduction, refinement, relevance, reproducibility, and responsibility—driving a shift toward more humane and scientifically advanced methodologies.

In parallel, tissue engineering is rapidly transforming the biomedical landscape, offering unprecedented opportunities to model diseases, accelerate drug discovery, and evaluate the pre-clinical efficacy of immunotherapies and other cell-based therapies. By combining biomaterials, living cells, and engineering principles, tissue engineering allows for the creation of complex and functional systems that closely mimic human tissues and organs. Importantly, these advancements are now revolutionizing our understanding of disease mechanisms, improving therapeutic development, and offering new approaches for the clinical management of many diseases, ranging from oncology to regenerative medicine.

In this Special Issue, Next-Gen Tissue Engineering in Disease Modelling, Drug Discovery and Immunotherapeutics, we encourage the submission of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, protocols, and perspective papers that push the boundaries of tissue engineering and its application to disease modelling and therapeutic development. Through this Special Issue, we aim to highlight and open a critical discussion on how next-gen tissue engineering is reshaping biomedical research, offering novel insights that could have transformative effects on both basic science and clinical practise.

Therefore, topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advances in 3D tissue culture and organoid models for disease studies.
  • Integration of tissue engineering with drug discovery platforms.
  • Microphysiological systems and organ-on-a-chip models for high-throughput drug screening.
  • Tissue-engineered models for personalized medicine and therapeutic testing.
  • Applications of bioprinting and biomaterials in regenerative medicine.
  • Translational approaches for tissue-engineered constructs in clinical therapies.

I look forward to your contributions, and we are excited to share in the advancements that will continue to drive innovation in tomorrow’s medicine.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
