Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,  

Optic neuropathies belong to a group of disorders with abnormalities and dysfunction of the optic nerve. Different types of optic neuropathies can lead to various severities of visual impairment and blindness. Despite different etiologies for different types of optic neuropathies, they share a common pathophysiology of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death and axonal loss. Mammalian RGCs, with limited endogenous regenerative capacity, are vulnerable to diseases, stresses and injuries. Partial functional recovery is possible under current clinical interventions; yet, the visual defect still cannot be fully recovered. Pre-symptomatic disease diagnosis, rescuing RGCs from degeneration, activating endogenous RGC regeneration, and exogenous RGC replacement are the major research challenges that need to be tackled to improve the quality of life of the patients.  

This Special Issue is open for original research, reviews, and perspectives on the latest aspects in molecular pathology, diagnostics, and therapeutics for different types of optic neuropathies. This Special Issue welcomes submissions covering, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Genetics of glaucoma and optic neuropathies;
  • Transcriptomics, Metabolomics, Lipidomics, and Glycomics in glaucoma and optic neuropathies;
  • Pathology and molecular mechanisms of glaucoma and optic neuropathies;
  • Translational research in glaucoma and optic neuropathies;
  • Clinical diagnosis and treatments on glaucoma and optic neuropathies;
  • Stem-cell based regenerative treatments for glaucoma and optic neuropathies;
  • Neuroprotective treatments for glaucoma and optic neuropathies.
