Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

After the discovery of antibiotics, infectious diseases are largely controlled. Now, systemic degenerative diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in both developing and developed societies. Moreover, the main target of systemic degenerative diseases is the middle-aged and elderly population, which poses an extra burden on the health system of society. Hence, extensive research is going on in all disciplines of degenerative diseases including cardiovascular, renal and neurological degenerative diseases. Much is known about the pathological processes of most systemic degenerative diseases. However, pathology-based therapy is still proven to be for most systemic degenerative diseases. One reason for this problem could be the interconnection and interdependence of various systems, and we need to think about the influence of other systems on a particular systemic disease. For example, changes in the hormonal system can affect neurodegenerative diseases profoundly. Such interaction and interconnection of the different systems in disease pathology are maintained by the vascular network. Therefore, changes in the vascular system could affect not only the cardiovascular system but other systems as well. If acquire knowledge about the influence of other systems on a particular systemic disease, and the role of the vascular network in the process, a better and more effective therapy for degenerative diseases could be developed. Therefore, we launch this Special Issue where the pathophysiology of degenerative diseases of any system, and the role of vascular changes can be discussed.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the role of vascular changes in all types of systemic degenerative diseases. We want to bring the pathophysiological changes of all systemic degenerative diseases, their relations with the other systems of the body, along with their relations with vascular changes under one umbrella, so that researchers in the field of systemic degenerative diseases can benefit from the knowledge of other disciplines, and get a new perspective on their own field of degenerative diseases.

IJMS has organized a series of Special Issues to highlight the latest advancements in science in order to be at the forefront of science in different fields of research. This editorial initiative of particular relevance, led by Dr. Sheikh Abdullah and Dr. Shozo Yano is focused on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, latest discoveries, recent advances, and future perspectives in the field of vessel-related degeneration of all systemic diseases.

The present Special Issue, entitled “Vascular Changes in Systemic Degenerative Diseases and their pathological implications: Molecular Biological Insights”, aims to present recent research developments to the wider community involved in this field. We welcome contributions in this field.

Degenerative diseases, encompassing a wide range of conditions affecting various organ systems, pose significant challenges to global healthcare systems. This comprehensive review explores the intricate interplay between the vascular system and degenerative diseases, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms and profound implications for disease progression and management. The pivotal role of the vascular system in maintaining tissue homeostasis is highlighted, as it serves as the conduit for oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to vital organs and tissues. Due to the vital role of the vascular system in maintaining homeostasis, its dysfunction, characterized by impaired blood flow, endothelial dysfunction, and vascular inflammation, emerges as a common denominator of degenerative diseases across multiple systems. In the nervous system, we explored the influence of vascular factors on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, emphasizing the critical role of cerebral blood flow regulation and the blood–brain barrier. Within the kidney system, the intricate relationship between vascular health and chronic kidney disease is scrutinized, unraveling the mechanisms by which hypertension and other vascular factors contribute to renal dysfunction. Throughout this review, we emphasize the clinical significance of understanding vascular involvement in degenerative diseases and potential therapeutic interventions targeting vascular health, highlighting emerging treatments and prevention strategies. In conclusion, a profound appreciation of the role of the vascular system in degenerative diseases is essential for advancing our understanding of degenerative disease pathogenesis and developing innovative approaches for prevention and treatment. This review provides a comprehensive foundation for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers seeking to address the intricate relationship between vascular health and degenerative diseases in pursuit of improved patient outcomes and enhanced public health.
