Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Aging is an inevitable heterogeneous phenomenon involving the whole organism and results in a deterioration in the central nervous system and the endocrine system. Multifaceted and complex changes, affecting the structural and functional efficacies of a multitude of organs, occur when life progresses from adulthood to senescence, and result in a decline of various hormones. The occurrence of hormone deficiencies is constituted to be the major cause of human senescence and it is associated with numerous health complications and comorbidities along with a host of pathologies. Needless to say, hormones influence nearly all physiological and pathophysiological processes, ranging from organogenesis to carcinogenesis to neurodegeneration, which involve the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid–adrenal–gonadal (HPTAG) auto regulating system. Age-related disruption of the HPTAG axis modulates the immune system and contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. The manifestations of these insufficiencies include, but are not limited to, diminished eyesight, impaired memory and cognitive function connecting neurodegenerative diseases, decreased muscle mass and bone density, decreased steroid biosynthesis, sexual dysfunction and depression, increased risk in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and various skin disorders and cancers. These conditions profoundly affect the elderly women and men within the context of a substantial rise in life expectancy, thus, preservation of bodily and hormonal homeostasis for proper functioning of diverse activities. Notably, age-related diverse complications and diseases are also impacted by immunocompromised conditions, including diabetes, obesity, CVDs, and cancers. A variety of hormones play pivotal roles in many, if not all, of these above-mentioned situations. Therefore, the improvement of physical function and mobility, in reinstating bodily/hormonal homeostasis, in continuously growing aging populations is a high priority of medicine today for healthy living of geriatric populations.

This Special Issue is aimed to publish original research and review articles that address current knowledge and understanding of fundamental, cellular, and molecular events involved in age-associated vulnerabilities, correlation to hormonal disparities, and potential therapeutic interventions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
