Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The impact of the environment on the development of chronic diseases is acknowledged as the main global cause of death. To this end, cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, diabetes, and cancer have gained prominence in recent years, associated with environmental exposure to chemicals and metabolic responses.

Metabolomics is a potential tool for understanding the effects of environmental contaminants on the human body, since metabolic profiling allows a comprehensive view of the molecular changes that occur in response to exposure to these xenobiotics. This not only helps us better understand the mechanisms related to toxicity but also allows us to identify potential biomarkers that can predict risks to human health.

Traditionally applied biomarkers in environmental exposure assessments are related to recent exposure rather than health effects, which are more directly linked to health risks. Thus, environmental risks are underestimated. Comprehensive assessment strategies capable of detecting changes in metabolite profiles caused by chemical exposure may indicate toxicity biomarkers that can be applied to future studies.

These biomarkers can serve as early signs of exposure to environmental contaminants and even as risk indicators for the development of exposure-related diseases. This not only contributes to a better understanding of related health impacts but can also aid in the formulation of more effective and essential prevention and intervention strategies to protect both health and the environment.

This Special Issue is devoted to the Metabolic Impacts of Toxic Exposures on Human Health and Potential Biomarkers and the topics that will be covered include (not exclusively):

  • Important concepts of metabolome analysis;
  • The steps of both untargeted and targeted metabolomics workflow;
  • Studies on metabolomic analyses, which provide early diagnosis of alterations in xenobiotic metabolism via metabolic patterns or signatures that indicate chemical exposure (environmental or occupational) or reveal patients’ health or disease status.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
