Interests: Prof Claudia Ciniglia is associate professor at the Department of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, L. Vanvitelli University. She has 25 years of experience in the field of algal research, with a focus on eukaryotic biodiversity, taxonomy and the phylogeny of phototrophic protists. She is considered a leader in the study of extremophiles from hot and acidic environments and has contributed to building one of the largest algal collections through several sampling campaigns carried out at volcanic sites worldwide. Prof. Ciniglia boasts collaboration with international research groups and is a leader in evolution of algae. In recent years, Prof. Ciniglia focused on bioremediation, biorecycling and the biorecovery of metals using extremophiles, becoming one of the principal investigators of national grant projects. She leads a brilliant research team of PhD students, post-docs and students.

Interests: Dr. Manuela Iovinella is a researcher at the “Luigi Vanvitelli” University of Campania. She works on the exploitation of the extremophilic microalga Galdieria sulphuraria for the biorecovery of rare-earth elements (REEs) from e-waste. She first became interested in this microorganism during her PhD degree at the “Federico II” University of Naples, where she studied its genetic and biogeographical evolution. Then, she continued to pursue this interest as a PhD student at the University of York, during which time she became an expert on the genomic and transcriptomic data of G. sulphuraria. Moreover, she had the opportunity to start a new challenging project on applying G. sulphuraria biomass to recover metals from electronic end-of-life technologies. Nowadays, she is PI of a project, during which she is obtaining new interesting data, resulting in numerous publications, and becoming one of the few research groups worldwide working on the exploitation of G. sulphuraria biomass for REE recycling.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Extremophilic microalgae can colonise and thrive in inhospitable environments (extremely low or high pH, temperature, salinity, pressure and radiation). Over the past few decades, extremophilic microalgae have been thoroughly studied, providing insights into the origin and evolution of life on Earth and the mechanisms of tolerance and adaptation to harsh environmental conditions. The adaptation to extreme life could be due to structural features and hidden genome information that might be transcribed in specialised molecules, depending on environmental conditions. Lately, powerful sequencing and bioinformatics methods have also been used to predict extremophilic proteins with great potential in biotechnological and pharmaceutical applications. 

This Special Issue on extremophilic microalgae aims to collect a wide range of research on physiology, evolution and biotechnological application of extremophilic microalgae to increase and deepen knowledge of life at the extremes. As the Guest Editors of the Special Issue, it is our pleasure to invite you to submit your cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research articles and reviews related to extremophilic microalgae.
