Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The study of marine ecosystems has recently become a hot research topic. Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, and therefore marine biodiversity is an essential part of the global system. Marine biodiversity describes the variety of life on earth, and this diversity operates at various scales, from genes to species to entire ecosystems. Biodiversity therefore refers to all lifeforms and their behaviors, the environments or habitats in which they live, and the complex system of relationships between organisms, such as food webs and competition for resources. Therefore, it is mandatory to better understand the role of biodiversity in maintaining the functionality of ecosystems; to understand the relationships between human pressures and ecosystems; to understand the impact of global change on marine ecosystems; to assess the health of marine ecosystems in an integrative way; to manage the seas using the ecosystem approach and spatial planning; modeling ecosystems for better management.

The aim of this Special Issue is to collect papers regarding marine biodiversity conservation and sustainability, paying special attention to current perspectives, future needs and challenges of marine habitats.

The present Issue will be dedicated to studies focused on the conservation and sustainability of marine biodiversity, including relevant papers dealing with the status of marine species or habitats of conservation concern, the impact of human activities on species or habitats, methods of mitigating impacts or stress factors, restoration of marine habitats.

Additionally, this Special Issue invites papers that address the topic of mitigating and restoring marine habitats and their ecosystem services. The focus will be on implementing the European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive for European Seas, but submissions are not limited to this.

The Special Issue is accepting papers that present cutting-edge findings in the identification, detection, monitoring, control, and prevention of various threats and disruptions to marine habitats. Scientific, technical, and management papers, as well as ideas, opinions, and mini-reviews, are all welcome. The primary objective of this Special Issue is to showcase marine conservation and sustainability, which will be effectively portrayed through a series of anticipated papers.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
