Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In today’s rapidly changing market environment, it is increasingly necessary that industry leaders implement a sustainable production/operations management (SPOM) strategy. There is, therefore, a growing commitment within the global research community to explore novel methods of reducing waste and optimizing production processes to lead the charge in the development of sustainable business practices.

A lean system reduces waste in all forms while improving production efficiency. Moreover, the lean philosophy promotes continuous improvement, leading to the adoption of new technologies and practices that enhance sustainability.

Additionally, SPOM is evolving by leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing, as part of the fourth industrial revolution. Industry 4.0 is capable not only of enabling new business models and production processes but also more sustainable activities.

By integrating SPOM into lean manufacturing and Industry 4.0, the environmental impact of these processes can be reduced, their efficiency can be improved, and sustainable growth can be achieved. This Special Issue is thus timely and valuable for business and academia. The publication of novel findings will contribute to improving industry practices worldwide.

We invite you to submit an original article or literature review to this Special Issue on “Sustainable Production/Operations Management in Lean Manufacturing and Industry 4.0.” By integrating environmental, social, and economic factors into production and operations management, this Special Issue will provide insights into a rapidly evolving global market.

This paper presents a structured framework for implementing Industry 4.0 projects. The framework is developed through an extensive review of the existing literature, wherein potential challenges and success factors related to adopting disruptive technologies in such projects are systematically analyzed and categorized. Additionally, the authors introduce a semi-structured questionnaire tailored for interviews with key decision-makers in companies strategically pursuing digital transformation. This questionnaire is designed to elicit valuable insights based on the experiences and perspectives of these decision-makers. The resulting framework is synthesized from the interviews and literature review. It delineates the essential steps necessary for the effective implementation of Industry 4.0 projects, focusing on establishing strategic priorities as the foundational stage of the entire process. Craft beer production has grown extensively worldwide. The variety of products and grains that can be used in production make this artisanal product unique. In this study, we propose a system dynamics model that allows for the evaluation of different production scenarios in which figs are used as the main ingredient. This research is inspired by the real case of small fig producers in Valle del Mayo in Navojoa, Sonora, Mexico, who, in 2020, took on the challenge of creating a processing factory for fig-derived products. This paper presents the development and application of a system dynamics approach to model the entire supply chain of overripe figs, i.e., figs that cannot be marketed in prime quality but can still be used in the production of derivative products. The method used for its development encompasses the following stages: (1) defining the craft beer supply chain variables; (2) elaborating on causal diagrams; (3) producing model stock and flow diagrams; (4) model validation; (5) sensitivity analysis and scenario evaluations; and (6) building a graphical user interface (GUI). The proposed model allows managers to assess several production policies under various assumptions of capacity and beer demand, demonstrating its value as an effective tool for strategic decision making. Today’s businesses face a critical need to balance sustainability, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence. Integrating lean and green methodologies holds promise for achieving this balance but presents challenges in real-sector implementation. Despite extensive research in the scientific community, a universally accepted model for integrated lean and green implementation is lacking. Limited research also explores the impact of lean tools on environmental performance indicators. This study aims to identify key economic and environmental performance indicators and investigate how they are influenced by lean tools. The primary objective is to develop a decision-making model facilitating lean tool implementation based on a company’s priorities for economic and environmental performance. The methodology involves a literature review, complemented by questionnaires and interviews with experts from academia and the real sector. The findings show that commonly used lean tools positively influence economic and environmental indicators. The decision-making model, tailored to chosen criteria priorities, was successfully validated using simulated and real company data, which makes it a potentially valuable resource for companies navigating integrated lean and green methodologies. While the obtained results show promise, it is important to highlight the limitations arising from the regional focus on Croatia and the inclusion of a subset of the manufacturing industry. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a methodology that has been widely used to evaluate the environmental impact of products and processes throughout entire life cycles. In this context, the reuse of waste in paved road construction is a practice that has received increasing attention as a sustainable alternative to solid waste disposal. This article presents a systematic review of existing studies on the LCA of paved roads that incorporate waste reuse and proposes a guideline for LCA in this context. Several criteria were analyzed in the articles, and the results showed that only 5% of the articles followed all the recommendations set out in ISO 14040. The proposed guideline aims to provide guidance for future research and includes recommendations for each of the steps involved in LCA, from defining the objectives and scope of the study to interpreting the results. Exploring BoP Generations through Business Model Innovation Lens: A Review and Framing

The evolution of base/bottom of the pyramid (BoP) literature from BoP 1.0 to 3.0 prompted the need for fresh theoretical perspectives to address complex and persistent social issues. This article investigates BoP through the lens of business model innovation, using a literature review along with bibliometric, network, and content analyses, to map the intellectual and conceptual structure and understand the key variables relating to BoP business models. The research encompasses 161 articles extracted from the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Documents were screened manually and with the assistance of VOS Viewer 1.6.18, Biblioshiny 4.0, IBM SPSS 20, UCINET6, and NVivo12, using abductive and deductive coding techniques. The findings reveal a prevailing focus on the exploratory phase among the articles, with a predominant utilization of qualitative research methods, particularly centered on case studies. Interviews and public data sources constitute the primary sources for supporting empirical evidence. Notably, the majority of these cases pertain to emerging economies situated across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, with India emerging as the most frequently cited country in the literature. Sectors, such as energy, healthcare, agrifood, finance, and telecommunications are studied, emphasizing themes of innovation, entrepreneurship, and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Emerging themes include social entrepreneurship, frugal innovation, and inclusive business models. The research panorama encompasses a categorization of BoP enterprises based on their origin (top-down or bottom-up), their typology (commercial, assistance, or collaboration), and their interactions with BoP communities (either as customers or entrepreneurs). From an innovation standpoint, certain concepts emerged, notably frugal innovation and bricolage, accompanied by the incorporation of ecosystem theory and sustainability perspectives. The research also outlines a BoP business model framework, providing insights into key components favored by entrepreneurs in this realm. Full article
