Urban Land Use and Urban Sustainability

Dear Colleagues,

Urban land use and urban sustainability are critical interdisciplinary fields that address the complex dynamics of rapidly growing urban environments. In the contemporary world, urbanization is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, leading to significant changes in land use across different regions and countries. This rapid urbanization results in highly varied and intensive human activities, reorganizing urban landscapes into sprawling or compact land use patterns. Each of these forms has profound implications for natural resources, environmental health, and socioeconomic development.

This Special Issue aims to compile literature from a wide range of disciplines on contemporary urban land use and sustainability in different regions, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the global challenge of high-quality urban development. Original and innovative scholarly papers are needed to explore the spatial transformations, efficiency changes, and policy evolutions of urban land use. Advanced technological approaches, such as remote sensing, geographic information systems, big data, and social networks, are particularly welcome. Econometric methods and policy analyses are also encouraged, as authorities and governance models play a crucial role in the sustainable development and land use evolution of cities in many countries or regions around the world.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome and research areas may include, but are not limited to:

• Urban–rural land use and sustainable development;
• Sustainable cities and land use resilience;
• Regional land use and development;
• Applications of geo-informatics in urban land use and urban sustainability;
• Public policy analysis in urban areas;
• Urban spatial patterns and sustainable land use;
• Sustainable urban land management approaches;
• The theories or methods of using urban big data to monitor urban development;
• Low-carbon-oriented urban spatial structure optimization;
• Urban land use transformation and changes in benefits.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
