Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce a forthcoming Special Issue on Carbon Markets, Sustainable Rural Development, and Food Security: Economic and Policy Strategies. The intersection of carbon markets, rural development, and food security represents a rapidly evolving research area. As countries and communities seek to address climate change while ensuring sustainable livelihoods and resilient food systems, understanding the economic and policy mechanisms that link these fields has become increasingly critical. Despite growing literature in each area individually, there remains a need for integrative studies that examine their synergies, trade-offs, and practical implications.
The Special Issue aims to explore how carbon market mechanisms, such as carbon pricing, emissions trading, and voluntary carbon credits, can support sustainable rural development and enhance food security. This topic aligns closely with the journal’s focus on technical, environmental, cultural, economic and social sustainability of human beings, which provides an advanced forum for studies related to sustainability and sustainable development, providing a platform for multidisciplinary contributions that advance both theory and practice.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:
- Economic impacts of carbon markets on rural communities and agricultural systems·
- Policy innovations linking carbon trading, food security, and sustainable development·
- Carbon finance and rural livelihoods: opportunities and challenges
- Role of carbon markets in climate-smart agriculture and land-use change
- Governance, equity, and distributional issues in carbon markets
- Rural poverty alleviation and income diversification through carbon credit initiatives
- Carbon markets and global food systems resilience
- Comparative analyses of carbon market policies across regions and countries
- Integration of carbon markets with biodiversity, conservation, and rural policy agendas
- Contribution of carbon market mechanisms to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- The role of carbon markets in international climate negotiations and COP outcomes
- Interactions between carbon markets and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in shaping rural sustainability
We look forward to receiving your contributions.
