Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Tourism is not the “green” industry it was supposed to be. If not adequately managed, it can impact negatively on the environment and host communities. Recent studies calculate that tourism was responsible for about 8% of global CO2 emissions before the COVID-19 pandemic. Of this, air transportation, just to reach the destination, accounted for about 3% of global emissions. There were cases of overtourism due to lack of planning and poor management of tourist activities, as well as displacement of hosting populations from residential areas in historic quarters and city centres caused by digital platforms of tourist rental accommodation. In other cases, the lack of tourism planning led to the destruction of the natural beauty of some destinations through high-rise building, overbuilding, and tourism massification. Seasonality is still the main drawback of many tourism destinations. On the other hand, pandemics and security issues can harm the economic and social sustainability of tourism.

It is commonly agreed that tourism must give its contribution to the UN sustainable development goals, and this means that it needs to become sustainable from the three bottom-line perspective encompassing the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. it is also agreed that tourism can make important economic contributions and generate jobs and development in destinations. One of the great challenges is how to do it without causing negative impacts, harming the environment, and, on the other hand, benefiting the host regions and populations.

The tourism industry needs to undergo a deep transformation. Innovation will play a key role in this transformation, which includes planning and implementing sustainable tourism activities involving all concerned stakeholders and reducing the consumption of energy and water. Innovation will also allow greater mobility with less consumption of resources. Education towards more sustainable attitudes and behaviour is a central issue.

On the other hand, this transformation will occur in parallel with the global digital transformation that the world is currently witnessing and that will intensify in the future. Sharing experiences in social networks, e-Wom, digital access to information, smart technology, virtual and augmented reality have become mainstream. How will technology further impact tourism? Will robotisation in tourism and hospitality represent a new challenge in the future?

This Special Issue is not only intended to present directions and trends for the relaunching of tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic but also to reflect on the past and present of tourism to learn about the realities that make the sustainable transformation necessary and urgent. Papers on (but not restricted to) the following topics are welcome:

The purpose of this study was to determine how residents in Novi Sad (The European Capital of Culture 2022) perceive the influence of cultural involvement and place attachment on their attitude toward tourism, and how this affects their support for tourism development. In order to investigate the relationships between these factors, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used. The proposed model was tested, and the findings show significant relationships between residents’ cultural involvement, place attachment, perceived positive and negative impacts of tourism (economic, socio-cultural, environmental), and support for tourism development. The findings of the study could assist tourism planners not only in Novi Sad but also in other urban destinations. Full article

Concerns around healthy and sustainable food, particularly regarding the standardization of production, cost control, and revenue maximization, are issues challenging food and beverages researchers and professionals. There are some available models to create standardized recipes for food and beverages, but they are weak in holistic terms from the point of view of management and legally required information. The purpose of this study was to develop an artifact, an online holistic standardized recipe, to allow the management of information in terms of recipes, costs, allergens, sustainability, nutrition facts, and menu pricing strategies. The research approach was conducted using a design science research methodology developed in two cycles. The artifact was produced from a literature review conducted to define the design principles, and it was evaluated across exploratory focus group and field study phases. The primary outcome of this research was the development of an online holistic standardized recipe. The artifact was considered relevant and useful by the stakeholders participating in the exploratory focus group and field study. However, studying the edible portion and the average weight of the recipe ingredients is necessary for the artifact to become more robust. The paper provides new insights and practical guidelines for academics and professionals in the food and beverage industry. Full article

Background: In this paper, we examine how social media influencers can influence visit intention, especially in the case of Raffi Ahmad and Nagita Slavina, a top influencer who by 2 September 2021 had reached 21.3 M subscribers on YouTube and 54.9 m followers on Instagram with an engagement rate of 0.42%. The focus of this study is Generation Y or Millennials (born 1981–1996) and Generation Z (born 1997–2012). Design/methodology/approach: Snowball sampling was performed to arrive at a representative group of Millennials. Data analysis was performed using hierarchical likelihood via structural equation modeling. Findings: The study results are helpful for a comprehensive understanding of factors affecting visit intention. Effects of the study results summary, tourists from Generations Y and Z are thriving within the internet of things and the digital age, an era in which information can be accessed via various forms of technology across multiple platforms. Practical implications: We discuss and identify the relative importance of each factor through the use of logistics with variational approximation and structural equation models using hierarchical likelihood. Originality: The technique we use is an integrated and extended version of the structural equation model with hierarchical likelihood estimation and features selection using logistics variational approximation. New tourism destinations and product supply are increasingly popular strategies among industry players to create competitiveness. The tourism industry has become more vibrant since globalization merged with technological changes, thus influencing human travel movements, lifestyles, and current trends. The purpose of the study was to systematically review and analyse the elements of new tourism destination products and the importance of sustaining the tourism industry. The following five primary methodological steps were used in the review processes: review protocol; formulation of research questions; systematic searching strategies based on identification, screening, and eligibility on Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases; quality appraisal and data extraction; analysis. Seven major themes were discovered, based on the thematic analysis: (a) Responsibilities and involvement, (b) Geography and resources, (c) Innovation, (d) Diversification, (e) Trend and travel pattern, (f) Sustainability, and (g) Marketing. The findings provide academics with a basic reference in scientific and design-related frameworks for examining new destinations and tourism products. The study also offers a guide for destination operators and industry stakeholders to be adopted for future destination development and management. Full article

Transformative tourism (TT) has been gaining a lot of attention over the past few years due to its power to transform both the individual and the world we live in, in a positive way. Although presently consisting of a plethora of studies, transformative tourism lacks the lens of a bibliometric approach to track its growth in a more objective and quantitative manner. In this article, a total of 250 publications were analysed using several bibliometric performance metrics, science mapping techniques, such as citation analysis, co-occurrence, and co-authorship, as well as enrichment procedures. By combining these methods, the study identifies the most prolific journals, reference studies in the field, key authors, collaboration patterns, geographic distribution, preferred methods, major research topics, as well as an overall research timeline in this area of study. Findings suggest that transformative tourism could become the heart of tourism in the upcoming years as it begins to take deeper roots through new junctions and discoveries, appealing to more researchers and practitioners, with the literature on TT thus gaining momentum. This paper contributes to fill a research gap and capture the evolution of the fast-growing concept of transformative tourism using bibliometric analysis. The article provides useful insights as well as further research directions for both researchers and tourism practitioners interested in this field of study. Full article
