Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The tourism sector has undergone a notable evolution in the last fifteen years. To talk about this sector, we not only have to take into account the traditional hotel industry, but figures such as tourist apartments, campsites and other elements related to the sharing economy. Likewise, the effect of culture and heritage on the "new" tourism sector and the traditional one is of great importance. On the other hand, given the health crisis derived from COVID-19, the tourism industry has been affected, expecting a latent recovery in the short term.

There is a clear relationship between tourism and cultural heritage, so that destinations that have this heritage have a differentiating tourist offer. Additionally, the relationship between heritage and consolidation as a cultural destination leads to a growing tourism demand. Globalization allows the growth of this tourism product to be remarkable, and therefore allows the growth of those tourist destinations that cover it, allowing a sustainable growth of the tourism brand. Related to the cultural heritage of the destination, it is worth highlighting the relationship between the traditional tourism sector, the hotel sector and tourist apartments. A fundamental part of cultural heritage regarding tourism is historic hotels. On many occasions, tourists seek a complete experience in the heart of the culture of the tourist destination. Although offers of this type of accommodation may be fewer, it is a differentiating element of the destination.

For this reason, Sustainability invites articles related to the tourism industry, the relationship between all aspects of tourism, gentrification, tourism territory management, heritage, culture, the hotel sector and sustainable tourism development plans. Different points of view may be accepted, more specifically focused on the economic and social aspects.

Referring to the applied methodology, the use of econometric data analysis techniques is invited, such as panel data, cross sections, time series or spatial data analysis, as well as comparative studies of different territories.
