Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are currently living in a context of sudden and unprecedented disruptions that continue to challenge the sustainability of small entities, large corporations, and state-led institutions all over the world [1]. Global pandemics, credit crunches, and financial distress, political instability and social inequality, acts of violence and civil unrest, disasters triggered by natural hazards [2], and widening development gaps characterize the new era of major socio-economic disturbances and extreme environmental jolts. The entirety of humanity is witnessing the emergence of distinct realities and novel paradigms of being, thinking, doing, and behaving [3] that call into question the applicability and viability of previously adopted models of leadership and management. Nowadays, decision makers increasingly recognize that systemic change is imminent, necessitating new modi operandi and approaches to leading that are more dynamic, inclusive, accountable, and transformative to better prepare actors to embrace change and face the constantly evolving and unpredictable future [4].

This Special Issue aims to ignite provocative research questions, encourage meaningful conversations, share best practice advice, and offer preliminary reflections on recent experiences of people, teams, businesses, and nations in leading change to achieve sustainable outcomes. We encourage submissions from a wealth of theoretical and methodological traditions that address various aspects related to sustainability in organizational change and leadership development. Scholarly contributions that tackle this intriguing and thought-provoking subject from a cross-disciplinary vantage point are particularly welcome. Among the topics that could be of particular interest to the academic and industry readership are leadership and change-related issues that generate sustainable implications for growth and development at the micro and/or macro levels, such as knowledge management practices [5], talent management and future leadership skills, big data and data-driven transformation [6], business model innovation, organizational development and restructuring, novel business processes, and digital transformation and workplace outcomes [7].

A rapid pace of change presents an unforeseen and perpetual competitive challenge for organizations. Despite the existence of numerous change management models, organizational change leaders often encounter obstacles during the implementation phase that limit change effectiveness. This paper seeks to make a difference in managerial actions, specifically when implementing planned change, by directing them to use specific leadership actions during the change stage. While previous research has acknowledged the potential linkage between leadership and change effectiveness, a comprehensive exploration of this relationship within the realm of strategic change management remains lacking. This study aims to address this gap by comparing transactional and transformational leadership styles through the lens of the leadership-as-practice perspective. Specifically, this paper analyzes the alignment of these leadership styles with the Kotter model for implementing organizational change and investigates which leadership components or behaviors positively impact predetermined stages of change. Using the MLQ and a developed Kotter questionnaire, data was collected from 385 Lebanese employees working in SMEs experiencing change across the five provinces of Lebanon. PLS structural equation modeling was utilized to analyze the results, and the GoF value indicated that the study model is valid to be considered as a PLS global model. Our findings shed light on the dynamic interplay between leadership efficacy and distinct change stages. Rooted in the leadership-as-practice perspective, this study contributes a nuanced understanding of effective leadership’s crucial role in navigating the multifaceted challenges of organizational change, offering insights for practitioners and scholars alike. In an increasingly competitive landscape, both researchers and businesses are showing growing interest in promoting employee’s innovative work behavior (EIWB). Although earlier studies have highlighted the significance of transformational leadership (TL) in cultivating innovation among employees, there needs to be more understanding regarding the precise mechanisms and processes by which leaders exert their influence over the IWB of their employees. This study is based on the social exchange theory (SET) and upper echelon theory (UET) to investigate how the relationship between TL and employees’ IWB is mediated by the employees’ intellectual agility (EIA) and the employee’s voice (EV). To the best of researchers’ knowledge, this study represents the pioneering effort to examine the mediating mechanisms of EIA and EV between TL and EIWB within the specific context of small and medium Enterprises (SMEs) in a developing country. An online self-administered questionnaire was utilized to collect data from 430 SMEs in Pakistan. The proposed hypotheses were examined using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The study findings revealed a significant influence of TL on EIWB mediated by both their EIA and EV. These findings empower leaders to recognize their pivotal roles in nurturing innovation within their enterprises and crafting an optimal culture and climate conducive to innovative endeavors. Furthermore, this insight enables leaders to establish innovative environments that promote employees’ confident sharing of ideas and concepts. The study also includes a comprehensive finding and their implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research directions. Full article

The pharmaceutical industry has recently faced many environmental challenges and pressures due to increased environmental awareness. Prior researchers have found that green dynamic capability and green creativity are important aspects of sustainable growth and can provide a competitive edge. On the other hand, enhancing the environmental and social innovation behavior of employees through green dynamic capability and green creativity involves various issues, and there is a need to address these challenges. Therefore, this study’s objective is to examine the influence of green dynamic capability on environmental and social innovation behavior with the mediating role of green creativity and the moderating effect of a manager’s innovation proclivity. This study applied the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SME) method to test the hypotheses on a sample of 320 employees working in pharmaceutical industries in China. The main results are as follows. (1) Green dynamic capability positively influences green creativity and environmental and social innovation behavior. (2) Green creativity has a significant indirect effect on the relationship between green dynamic capability and social innovation behavior. (3) Managers’ innovation proclivity is significantly associated with green creativity and moderates the link between green dynamic capabilities and green creativity. This study provides theoretical and practical guidance for practitioners and policymakers to gain a better understanding of how to enhance green dynamic capability and green creativity to achieve the desired environmental and social innovation behavior for sustainability goals. This study aims to explore the pivotal role of green inclusive leadership (GIL) in driving sustainability efforts in the hotel industry, guided by the social exchange theory (SET). The research centers on three core objectives: firstly, evaluating how GIL directly impacts green work engagement (GWE), green organizational identification (GOI), and green organizational citizenship behavior (GOCB); secondly, examining how GWE and GOI influence GOCB; and thirdly, investigating whether GWE and GOI act as mediators in the relationship between GIL and GOCB. This study gathered data via an online questionnaire, completed by 446 front-line employees in eco-conscious five-star Saudi Arabian hotels. This study employed PLS-SEM with bootstrapping techniques to scrutinize seven hypotheses, encompassing both direct and indirect connections among study variables. The findings underscore the significant, positive influence of GIL on employees’ GWE and GOI, motivating their active participation in GOCBs. Furthermore, GWE and GOI play pivotal roles in enhancing employees’ engagement in GOCBs. Notably, GWE and GOI emerge as substantial mediators in the relationship between GIL and GOCB. These insights carry significant practical implications, poised to strengthen GOCB and drive sustainability initiatives in the hotel industry. Full article

The literature on sustainable competitive advantages and performance has grown extensively in organizations over the last three decades. However, sustainable competitive advantages have received limited attention from scholars in academic institutions. To contribute to the literature, this research examines how knowledge-oriented leadership stimulates team performance through innovation, eventually directing towards a sustainable competitive advantage in higher education institutions (HEIs). The data was gathered from 64 team leaders and 303 team members from Pakistan’s HEIs to assess the model. The results indicate that knowledge-oriented leadership significantly enhances team performance, with this association partially mediated by the speed of innovation. At the same time, no mediating role is observed for the quality of innovation. In addition, team performance and its relationship with a sustainable competitive advantage originated positively. As a result, HEIS should promote knowledge-oriented leadership as a crucial strategy for managing the complex dynamics of innovation, team performance, and sustainable competitive advantages. These institutions should prioritize appointing knowledge-oriented leaders to enhance innovation, team performance, and sustainable competitive advantages. Further implications are conferred. The establishment of sustainable leadership is essential for the process of implementing reforms in public sector. Sustainable leadership implies effective leadership capable of responding to changes that come from both the internal and external environment. To achieve this, it is necessary to apply multi-criteria decision-making methods. In this paper, the new multi-criteria decision-making method PIPRECIA was used to assess the criteria and five models of leader behaviour that are significant for the process of implementing reforms in the public sector of the Republic of Serbia. In essence, the paper aims to emphasise the simplicity of the practical application of the PIPRECIA method, which was discussed through a numerical illustration on the basis of which the conclusions were drawn. The research results indicate that the criterion Individual competence of the leader (C4-0.24) has the greatest weight. By ranking the alternatives, it was estimated that the Charismatic model of behaviour (A5-0.219) is the leader’s behaviour model that can have the greatest importance in the process of implementing public sector reforms. The Directive model of behaviour (A3-0.197) was derived as the second most important, which is understandable if we consider the fact that this model of leader’s behaviour traditionally dominates the work of the public sector. Furthermore, Participatory behaviour model (A1-0.193), Supportive behaviour model (A2-0.193) and Transformational behaviour model (A4-0.193) have equal rank, which means that they have the same importance for the decision-maker. The findings provide significant information to leaders of public organisations on how to implement reforms and manage human resources more effectively. Full article

In response to a business context characterized by change, a large number of approaches from different areas of knowledge has developed in the literature without an integrative framework. For this reason, the purpose of this research is to provide a comprehensive overview of change management literature. Taking as its basis a bibliometric study on change management, this article offers a classification of these approaches that provides an overview of the current state of the research on the role of managers in change management. Four hundred and ninety-three scientific documents (1333 keywords and 883 authors) were retrieved from the Web of Science database from 2013 to 2022. Our results identify three main topics underlying change management literature: organizational change, management and performance. The theoretical and practical implications of each dimension are analyzed and allow us to propose a classification of the literature on corporate change management. Furthermore, the implications of sustainability are also explained. Full article
