Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Motor and special electromagnetic devices have been widely used in fields such as industrial production, transportation, high-end manufacturing, national defense and the military industry, and they are an important energy power foundation for supporting social development. High-power density, high reliability, high adaptability, high precision, low emission and multi-functional composites are areas that are gradually developing at the forefront of the technological development of these devices. Future development and research will concentrate on technologies used in high-performance motors and special electromagnetic devices.

This Special Issue hopes to summarize the state-of-the-art technologies of high-performance motors and special electromagnetic devices, which include the summarization of the latest structural research and analysis, operation and control, integration and optimization, etc. Papers that employ the symmetry or asymmetry concept in their methodologies in the fields of motors and special electromagnetic devices are welcome. We also welcome scholars in related fields to contribute their latest research results to this Special Issue.

Topics of the research papers include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Modeling of motors and special electromagnetic devices;
  • Multi-physics coupling analysis and optimization;
  • Efficient temperature rises and cooling structure design;
  • Advanced drive technology;
  • Intelligent control strategy;
  • Highly reliable system operation;
  • Integrated design and analysis.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

In the traditional control scheme of a 12/8-pole bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM), radial force and torque are usually controlled as a compromise due to the conflict between their effective output areas. Additionally, each phase requires individual power circuits and is excited in turn to produce a continuous levitation force, resulting in high power device requirements and high controller costs. This paper discusses a 12/8-pole single-winding hybrid-rotor bearingless switched reluctance motor (HBSRM) with a hybrid rotor consisting of cylindrical and salient-pole lamination segments. The asymmetric rotor of the HBSRM slightly increases the complexity of its structure and magnetic circuit, but makes it possible to generate the desired radial force at any rotor angular position. A control scheme for the HBSRM is developed to utilize the independent excitation of the four windings in one phase to generate the desired levitation force at any rotor angular position, and it requires only half the number of power circuits used in the conventional control scheme of a 12/8-pole single-winding BSRM. Different from the average torque chosen to be controlled in traditional methods, this scheme directly regulates the instantaneous total torque produced by all excited phases together and presents a current algorithm to optimize the torque contribution of each phase so as to reduce torque pulsation, and the improved performance of this bearingless motor is finally validated by simulation analysis. In this paper, we propose a promising signal-sensing method based on both single- and multiple-antenna covariance matrices of the received signal. In comparison with microwave diagnostics or energy detection, the proposed method does not need prior information of signal and noise. Therefore, it can be widely used in noise power uncertainty scenarios, such as signal transmission in hypersonic plasma sheath, with symmetry to the signal-sensing method in cognitive radio. Designing an efficient signal-sensing method that supports both the application for the field of hypersonic plasma sheath communication or cognitive radio is still an attractive subject deserving of study in symmetry journals. Theoretical analysis and the implementation algorithm of a single-antenna covariance matrix are carried out for the proposed method, with a possible extension to multiple-antenna situations. Simulations show the proposed method has excellent performance, even for very low signal-noise-ratio (SNR) signals, and is competitive with state-of-the-art algorithms. Full article
