Vaccinium uliginosum (bog bilberry) is widely consumed in North America and Asia but has been historically avoided in many parts of Europe due to its alleged poisonous effects. We aimed to address this discrepancy in a systematic way with a combined phytochemical and ethnopharmacological approach, using UHPLC and UHPSFC for the chemical analysis, model organisms Caenorhabditis elegans and human liver cells GFP-Huh-7 for the bioactivity and toxicity testing, as well as fermentation experiments. Phytochemical analysis revealed minimal differences in the metabolite pattern between European and North American samples, with no evidence of toxic alkaloids or harmful secondary metabolites. Extracts exhibited no strongly toxic effects in the tested concentrations, neither in vitro (cell viability) nor in vivo (C. elegans). Berries infected by Monilinia megalospora showed altered flavonoid and anthocyanin contents but no increased toxicity. Notably, bog bilberries demonstrated a fermentation potential superior to Vaccinium myrtillus, resulting in an alcohol content of 4.8–5.8% ABV in unsweetened juices, thus potentially explaining historical accounts of inebriation. In conclusion, direct toxicity derived from these fruits is unlikely, but the alcohol content due to fruit fermentation is a plausible explanation for the folklore names (“drunk, inebriating berry”). However, additional factors such as human error, individual intolerance, or endophytic activity need to be considered. Full article

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in adults is well characterized and associated with multisystem dysfunction. A subset of patients develop post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC, or long COVID), marked by persistent and fluctuating organ system abnormalities. In children, distinct clinical and pathophysiological features of COVID-19 and long COVID are increasingly recognized, though knowledge remains limited relative to adults. The exponential expansion of the COVID-19 literature has made comprehensive appraisal by individual researchers increasingly unfeasible, highlighting the need for new approaches to evidence synthesis. Large language models (LLMs) such as the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) can process vast amounts of text, offering potential utility in this domain. Earlier versions of GPT, however, have been prone to generating fabricated references or misrepresentations of primary data. To evaluate the potential of more advanced models, we systematically applied GPT-4 to summarize studies on pediatric long COVID published between January 2022 and January 2025. Articles were identified in PubMed, and full-text PDFs were retrieved from publishers. GPT-4-generated summaries were cross-checked against the results sections of the original reports to ensure accuracy before incorporation into a structured review framework. This methodology demonstrates how LLMs may augment traditional literature review by improving efficiency and coverage in rapidly evolving fields, provided that outputs are subjected to rigorous human verification. Background/Objectives: Fungotherapy has long been recognized as a therapeutic approach for treating and preventing various diseases. As an important representative of the so-called functional mushrooms, Chaga plays a crucial role in this system. Since this species is of limited distribution in Bulgaria, we are interested in studying a related but different species, Inonotus nidus-pici Pilát, with potential benefits for human health. Methods: The phytochemical composition of phenolic compounds in the studied species was analyzed using spectrophotometric methods and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Additionally, antioxidant activity was assessed using various assays, and the gastroprotective effect was evaluated in experimental rat models with indomethacin-induced gastric damage. Results: The quantities of the main classes of phenolic compounds in the studied object were determined, and an enriched phenolic extract (EPE) was obtained. The amount of phenolic compounds, in decreasing order, is as follows: tannins (1.67 ± 0.02%), phenolic acids (1.50 ± 0.09%), and flavonoids (1.24 ± 0.04%). Quercetin was the most present flavonoid (15.95 ± 0.05 mg/g DWE), followed by (+)-catechin (9.86 ± 0.15 mg/g DWE) and kaempferol (1.67 ± 0.09 mg/g DWE) in the enriched phenolic extract. The quantity of other established compounds was significantly lower. Of all ten phenolic acids identified in the same extract, the highest concentration was found only for rosmarinic acid (6.41 ± 0.08 mg/g DWE) and somewhat for p-coumaric acid (2.13 ± 0.12 mg/g DWE). Among all the applied methods regarding antioxidant activity, the highest potential of the extract for reducing copper ions was the most pronounced (1506.93 μM TE/g DWE), and the ability of the extract to reduce iron ions was almost the same (1354.05 μM TE/g DWE). In the experimental indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer rat model, EPE (25 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg) demonstrated a dose-dependent gastroprotective effect. Conclusions: The results of the experiments confirm the potential of the wood fungus species as a source of valuable biologically active compounds with beneficial and pharmacological effects. However, further studies are needed to fully determine its chemical composition and the biological activities related to it. Full article

A 15-Year One Health Approach to Antimicrobial Resistance in Kuwait from Hospitals to Environmental Contexts: A Systematic Review

Kuwait has reported a problematic increase in the prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). However, the absence of studies that analyze AMR from combined human, agricultural (animal), and environmental domains limits our ability to assess the extent of the problem in Kuwait. Therefore, this systematic review provides a comprehensive insight into the AMR status in Kuwait regarding humans, agriculture (animals), and the environment from the perspective of the One Health approach. A systematic search was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to identify the relevant literature on AMR in Kuwait. Multiple online electronic databases, including the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, BioMed Central (BMC), and Scopus, were searched to perform a narrative synthesis and meta-analysis. Twenty-eight studies published between 2009 and 2024 were included in this study. Domain-wise distribution varied, with 11 studies related to clinical settings, 11 to the environment, 4 to agricultural (animal), and 2 to both clinical and community settings. The narrative synthesis indicated a high occurrence of AMR bacteria in human, agriculture (animal), and environmental domains. In human domains, the dominant AMR isolates belonged to four Gram-negative species: E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. In agriculture (animals), Salmonella isolates from poultry display high resistance to cefotaxime, ampicillin, and amoxicillin. Camel milk analyses revealed that 80% of bacterial isolates are resistant to antibiotics such as penicillin, tetracyclines, and carbapenems. An environmental analysis of sewage, seawater, sediment, and aerosol samples documented widespread antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) with resistance mechanisms such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, carbapenemases, and colistin. The cross-domain analysis identified the overlapping of ARGs. Regarding the One Health approach, none of the studies used this approach to interlink these sectors. Meanwhile, the meta-analysis indicated a high resistance rate in humans (34.05%, 95% CI (22.81 to 46.27, p < 0.0001, I2 = 98.94%)), agriculture (animals) (67.42%, 95% CI (30.30 to 94.93, p < 0.0001, I2 = 97.40%)), and environment (69.86%, 95% CI (48.80 to 87.26, p < 0.0001, I2 = 98.78%)). The reported spread of AMR and the overlap of resistance genes among isolates across the domains demonstrate the interconnected nature of AMR in Kuwait. These findings underscore the need to adopt the One Health approach to strengthen surveillance, implement control measures, and enhance public education strategies to address the complexity of AMR challenges in Kuwait. This study investigates the sustainable livelihoods of households in the coastal forest regions of Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, focusing on identifying the key factors that shape household resilience in the face of socio-economic and environmental challenges. Although the sustainable livelihoods approach is widely established in research, this study differentiates itself by applying a multivariate analysis to explore the relative impacts of various livelihood capitals—human, physical, financial, social, and environmental—specifically within the context of coastal forest ecosystems, a relatively under-researched area in Vietnam. The research identifies both factors affecting livelihood outcomes, emphasizing the role of community resources, seasonal fluctuations, and adaptation strategies. Additionally, the study highlights how environmental changes and natural resource constraints are more detrimental to livelihoods in these regions compared to other rural settings. Through these insights, this paper contributes to the growing body of literature by offering a nuanced understanding of how coastal forest communities can navigate the pressures of climate change, market volatility, and limited resources. The findings underscore the importance of enhancing adaptive capacity and crafting targeted policy interventions to support vulnerable households in the region. This study also highlights the limitations of existing research, emphasizing the need for future studies to integrate the complex interplay of environmental, social, and economic factors in coastal ecosystems. Over the decades, cattle have not been considered primary hosts for influenza A viruses (IAV), and their role in influenza epidemiology has been largely unrecognized. While bovines are known reservoirs for influenza D virus, the recent emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in U.S. dairy cattle marks an alarming shift in influenza ecology. Since March 2024, this virus has affected thousands of dairy cows, causing clinical signs such as fever, reduced feed intake, drastic declines in milk production, and abnormal milk appearance. Evidence suggests that the virus may be replicated within mammary tissue, raising urgent concerns about milk safety, foodborne transmission, and occupational exposure. This review highlights the unprecedented expansion of viruses into bovine populations, exploring the potential for host adaptation, and interconnected roles of pets, peridomestic animals, and human exposure within shared environments. The potential impacts on dairy production, food safety, and zoonotic spillover highlight the urgent need for integrated One Health surveillance to stay ahead of this evolving threat. Full article

The assessment of pig welfare and health at abattoirs is crucial for ensuring both animal well-being and food safety. Traditional assessment methods often rely on human observation, which is time-consuming, subjective, and difficult to scale in high-throughput facilities. This systematic review addresses a crucial gap by identifying and evaluating non-invasive human-free diagnostic methods applicable in commercial settings. Following PRISMA guidelines, a total of 102 articles met the inclusion criteria. Thirteen distinct methods were identified and classified into three categories: biological sample analysis (5 methods; n = 80 articles), imaging and computer vision systems (4 methods; n = 19), and physiological and other sensors (4 methods; n = 24). Some articles assessed more than one method and are therefore counted in multiple categories. While no method achieved both high implementation and practicality, blood analysis for glucose and lactate, convolutional neural networks for lesion detection, and automated camera-based systems emerged as the most promising for practical integration into the slaughter flowline. Most techniques still face challenges related to automation, operator independence, and standardisation. Overall, this review highlights the growing potential of non-invasive methods in pig welfare evaluation and underscores the need for continued development and validation to facilitate their adoption into routine abattoir practices. Magnaporthe oryzae-induced rice blast remains a critical threat to sustainable rice farming, causing extensive losses in many rice-producing regions worldwide. Due to increasing concerns about pesticide overuse and its impact on the environment and human health, alternative control methods are being actively explored. Nanotechnology has recently gained attention as a potential tool for sustainable disease management. This review summarises current progress in the use of nanomaterials—including metal and biopolymer nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, targeted delivery systems, and biosensors—for the detection and control of rice blast. Studies have reported that nanomaterials can reduce disease severity by up to 70% and improve rice yield by 10–20% under field or greenhouse conditions. The mode of action, effectiveness under field conditions, and possible integration into integrated pest management (IPM) programs are discussed. The selection of literature followed the PRISMA-P framework to ensure a systematic and transparent review process. Challenges such as biosafety, environmental risks, and regulatory issues are also addressed, with emphasis on green synthesis methods and the need for field validation before practical application. This study presents a general overview of the important problem of pharmaceutical pollutants, aiming to draw attention to the global danger they represent and the need for concrete solutions for their remediation. Here, we summarize the available advanced knowledge on the occurrence and fate of pharmaceutical residues in the environment, particularly in water effluents, since they need a special approach when one takes into account the increasing consumption of medicines by both humans and animals, that might be discharged in aqueous systems and bio-accumulated in aquatic flora and fauna. This review details the presence of pharmaceutical wastes in water sources; their trajectories from production to consumption and release in household taps; their concentrations in natural water; methods for monitoring them; their risks; and their worldwide impacts. Adequate methods and advanced removal techniques for selected contaminants or classes of pharmaceutical compounds are discussed, together with their remediation potential and strategies. Local and global limiting proposals for these types of contaminants and concrete solutions for their remediation are recommended. Full article

Pharmaceutical contaminants such as ibuprofen are increasingly detected in water sources due to widespread use and insufficient removal by conventional treatment processes. Given its persistence and adverse effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems, efficient removal technologies are needed. This study reports the synthesis of a Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide (LDH) hybridized with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) via in situ co-precipitation to enhance adsorptive performance. The hybrid (LDH-CQD) was characterized by FTIR, XRD, DSC, TGA-DTG, SEM-EDS, BET, and pH in the point of zero charge (pHPZC) analysis. Results indicated a marked increase in surface area (2.89 to 66.9 m2/g), a shift in surface charge behavior (pHpzc from 8.57 to 6.21), and improved porosity. Adsorption experiments using ibuprofen as a model contaminant revealed superior performance of the hybrid compared to pristine Mg/Al-LDH, with a maximum capacity of 22.13 mg·g−1 (% Removal = 88.53%) at 25 ppm, and in lower concentrations (5 and 10 ppm), the hybrid showed 100% removal. Kinetic modeling followed a pseudo-second-order mechanism, and the isotherm was the SIPS model (maximum adsorption capacity = 24.150 mg.g−1). These findings highlight the potential of LDH-CQD hybrid as efficient and tunable adsorbents for removing emerging pharmaceutical pollutants from aqueous media. Full article

As Higher Education (HE) institutions expand their digital resources, students may be struggling to engage effectively with these tools. Academic help-seeking (AHS) is a useful framework for exploring help-seeking behaviour and could be applied to HE contexts, yet its application has been reported as inconsistent. Given the possible utility of this concept to support the growth in technology, a review of how academic help-seeking theory is applied in digital contexts can help to consolidate current understanding and guide future research. This scoping review examines the intersection of AHS and digital technology use in HE through analysis of peer-reviewed literature (2019–2024). Several gaps emerge: bias towards human-centred support, limited investigation of help-avoidance behaviours, insufficient attention to early help-seeking stages, and few studies examining spontaneous help-seeking in authentic digital learning environments. These findings indicate the need for expanded theoretical frameworks that better reflect modern learning behaviours and environments, alongside more diverse research approaches to understand how students integrate both human and non-human help sources in contemporary HE contexts. Very little is known about goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) and Sowerby’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon bidens), especially off the western coast of Ireland, due to their elusive behaviors. This study aimed to characterize the acoustics of these beaked whales and investigate whether temporal patterns may affect their occurrences. Using passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), beaked whale bioacoustic clicks were manually analyzed, revealing different click frequency ranges than expected. Double clicks and echoes produced by both beaked whale species were also present, which have previously been infrequently observed in these species. The occurrence of beaked whales and the presence of double clicks and echoes were further investigated, along with how the diel cycle may affect these click characteristics. Hourly presence of goose-beaked whale double clicks and echoes was found to have significance for both day and night. There was no significance found for Sowerby’s beaked whale double clicks and echoes for day and night, along with the hourly occurrences of both beaked whales and the occurrence of other beaked whales. These findings highlight the need for future research on PAM and beaked whale acoustics, which could aid in better monitoring of their presence to address the impacts of human activities. Background/Objectives: Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular parasite, poses a major global health concern owing to its potential for congenital transmission, particularly during pregnancy. Current pharmacological treatments, including spiramycin and pyrimethamine, exhibit limitations in both efficacy and safety, underscoring the need for novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, we investigated the antiparasitic potential of BthTX-II, an Asp49 phospholipase A2 (PLA2) isolated from Bothrops jararacussu venom, in human trophoblast cells (BeWo) and third-trimester human placental explants infected with T. gondii. Methods: In vitro assays were performed using BeWo cells infected with T. gondii tachyzoites and treated with non-cytotoxic concentrations of BthTX-II (3.125, 1.56, and 0.78 µg/mL). An ex vivo model employing third-trimester human placental villous explants was used under similar conditions. Parasite proliferation, adhesion, and invasion were assessed alongside host immune response modulation. Results: Our findings demonstrate that BthTX-II reduces T. gondii proliferation in BeWo cells at all tested non-cytotoxic concentrations. The toxin also significantly impaired parasite adhesion and invasion while modulating host immune response by upregulating interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), and downregulating vascular endothelial growth factor—potentially disrupting parasite proliferation. In placental villous explants, BthTX-II (1.56 μg/mL) reduced T. gondii proliferation and modulated IL-8, MIF, and tumour necrosis factor-alpha levels without compromising tissue viability. Conclusions: These findings highlight BthTX-II as a potential candidate in toxoplasmosis treatment. Further investigation should focus on its dual role in limiting parasite development and modulating immune responses at the maternal–fetal interface. Full article

Judging a person’s appearance as beautiful or ugly is not a factual description but an aesthetic act. Kant believed that the human figure is the ideal of beauty, and at the same time, beauty can positively symbolize morality. However, regarding the correlation between aesthetics and morality, the Chapter “De Chong Fu 德充符” in the Zhuangzi offers us a strikingly insightful perspective that is transcendent and religious. The characters depicted in “De Chong Fu 德充符” have incomplete physical forms and ugly appearances, which seemingly do not qualify as symbols of morality in Kant’s sense. Yet, their behavior and demeanor precisely reflect their detachment from external physical forms and their inner virtue being full. This inner virtue embodies a religious ethic that transcends individual and subjective perspectives. This paper posits that there is a deeper and more thought-provoking connection between virtue and physical form in Zhuangzi’s philosophy. The aim of this paper is to explore the issue of self-transcendence in Zhuangzi’s philosophy from the perspective of religious ethics, using the relationship between the body, beauty, and virtue in Lao–Zhuang philosophy as a guiding thread. This paper will be divided into three main parts: the first part introduces the topic through the symbolic relationship between beauty and morality in Kant; the second part discusses the transcendence of aesthetics and physical form in Daoist philosophy and provides a section-by-section analysis of Chapter “De Chong Fu 德充符” of the Zhuangzi; and the third part summarizes the relationship between virtue and form in “De Chong Fu 德充符”. The paper argues that the transcendence of the physical form by virtue, as reflected in Chapter “De Chong Fu 德充符”, is an embodiment of religious ethics. In Lao–Zhuang philosophy, due to their deep understanding of the nature of beauty and the nature of the body, there is no necessary positive connection between beauty and form. Virtue does not necessarily need to rely on beauty as a symbol to be realized, and there can still be a positive connection between a defective physical form and virtue. In conclusions, the paper proposes the modern inspiration of self-transcendence reflected in Zhuangzi’s “De Chong Fu 德充符”. Full article

The number of female astronauts participating in space missions is increasing, and concerns about the impact of spaceflight on reproductive health have emerged. Space radiation and microgravity pose potential threats to ovarian reserve and uterine function, but data on human female reproductive health in space remain scarce. This review explores current evidence from both real and simulated space conditions, including animal studies and ground-based cosmic radiation models. The relevant literature on cosmic radiation, fertility preservation strategies, and gynecological risk management in spaceflight was analyzed to provide a comprehensive synthesis. Space radiation might damage ovarian follicles and impair folliculogenesis, potentially leading to premature ovarian failure and microgravity might alter endocrine function. While human data are lacking, murine and in vitro model studies suggest significant reproductive risks. Embryo/oocyte and ovarian tissue cryopreservation are currently the most viable fertility preservation strategies. Shielding technologies, radioprotective agents, and hormonal modulation may offer adjunct protection. In conclusions, fertility counseling and preservation should become integral to pre-mission planning for female astronauts of reproductive age. A personalized approach, accounting for individual reproductive goals, age and mission duration, is essential. Further research is urgently needed to understand the reproductive effects of deep space travel and to develop targeted protective strategies. Full article
