Objectives: Soccer is the most practiced sport around the world. The injury incidence has an estimated rate of up to 70 injuries per 1000 h of play. FIFA 11+ is a program designed to prevent injuries and optimize performance. The purpose of this study was to analyze the acute effects of this program as a warm-up on different functional, physiological, and mechanical properties of various knee tissues and whether there were differences between genders. Methods: The sample included 45 recreational soccer players. Several muscular and tendon mechanical properties, muscular oxygen saturation, electromyography, maximum voluntary contraction, and rate of force development were analyzed, before and after performing the FIFA 11+. Results: Only a moderate significant increase in muscle oxygen saturation in men from pre- to post-test was reported. No other parameters showed statistically significant differences between groups, suggesting that the intervention may lack clinical relevance. The reported effect sizes were mostly trivial, so differences are unlikely to have significant practical relevance. Statistical analyses were performed using a 2 × 2 factorial repeated measures factorial ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc comparisons. Conclusions: FIFA 11+ warm-up does not provide a sufficient stimulus to elicit mechanical or metabolic responses in the per-knee structures. Other warm-up designs may be more appropriate for finding these effects. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cycling has become a popular recreational sport, but it can lead to injuries and overload syndromes. The goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a training-accompanied myofascial self-massage intervention on two primary outcomes: injury occurrence and perceived training intensity. Methods: To achieve this goal, we conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 35 cyclists. A difference-in-differences (DiD) regression analysis was employed to analyze the effects of the intervention. Results: The DiD analysis revealed, on the one hand, no statistically significant effect of the intervention on the overall injury score. On the other hand, the intervention group showed a significantly smaller increase in perceived training intensity compared to the control group, supporting the hypothesis that myofascial self-massage decreases the perception of training intensity. In one of our strongest models, which estimated the impact of the intervention from baseline to the second post-test, we observed an adjusted R-squared value of 0.89 and an interaction term coefficient of 1.35 at a significance level of p < 0.01. This indicates that, on average, the increase in perceived training intensity was 1.35 points higher (on a scale of 0 to 10) in the control group than in the intervention group. Conclusions: This study found no evidence to support the effectiveness of a training-accompanied myofascial self-massage in reducing injury levels, but it demonstrated that the intervention may reduce perceived training intensity. Future studies with larger sample sizes and more objective injury tracking methods are needed to further explore these findings and their long-term implications for injury prevention in cycling. Squash, which originated in the early 19th century, was officially incorporated into the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee in 2023. This inclusion marks a significant milestone, highlighting its growing international recognition and potential for global development. However, squash has historically been underrepresented in academic research compared to other popular sports, with studies being scattered and relatively underdeveloped. To systematically evaluate the current state of squash research and foster academic development in the field, this study employs a combination of bibliometric and qualitative analyses, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of squash research in terms of research progress, collaboration networks, key findings, and thematic evolution. Drawing on Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed data, the analysis covers 206 publications from 36 countries spanning from 1973 to 2024. Network analysis based on co-authorship frequency and geographic clustering identifies the UK and Australia as leading contributors, with extensive collaboration among institutions and authors. Performance analysis (tactical and technical modeling), physiological profiling (energy demands), and medical studies (injury epidemiology) emerged as the three core research areas. The study reveals a shift in research focus from safety and physiological characteristics to performance enhancement, which is driven by technological innovation. Future research should prioritize underdeveloped areas such as youth development, psychology, and nutrition while integrating diverse participant groups (e.g., female athletes, recreational players) and advanced technologies. Background: Recreational participation in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has rapidly increased. Despite consistent evidence of a high injury prevalence in MMA athletes, the neuromuscular implications of regular MMA training remain underexplored. The cervical spine is particularly vulnerable to trauma due to repetitive impacts and high mechanical demands in combat sports. Methods: This case-control study compared cervical spine function and self-reported symptoms between 25 recreational MMA athletes and 25 matched individuals who engaged in general fitness training. Outcome measures included Neck Disability Index (NDI), Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS), pain and headache reports, cervical range of motion (ROM), proprioception, isometric strength, and endurance. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictors of group classification. Results: The MMA group exhibited significantly higher values for post-concussion symptoms (p = 0.012), cervical flexor endurance (p = 0.031), and the number of concussions (p = 0.001) but lower flexion ROM (p = 0.031). No significant differences were observed in strength, proprioception, or NDI scores. Logistic regression identified the number of concussions, age, total cervical ROM, and average rotation strength as significant predictors of group membership (model AUC = 0.96; Nagelkerke R2 = 0.797). Conclusions: Recreational MMA athletes demonstrated higher rates of concussion-related symptoms and reduced cervical flexion ROM than noncontact exercisers despite no statistically significant differences in strength and proprioception. These findings suggest that cumulative exposure to amateur MMA is associated with alterations in cervical neuromuscular characteristics. These results support the implementation of targeted mobility, endurance, and injury prevention programs in recreational MMA training. Full article

Walking Football is a growing adapted sport offering a viable alternative to traditional exercise for middle-aged and older adults. While rule modifications aim to reduce injury risk, this has yet to be established. This study conducted injury surveillance in community-based Walking Football to determine injury incidence and characteristics in training and matches. A four-month observational cohort study remotely tracked injuries and exposure time across seven Walking Football clubs in England using a sub-elite injury surveillance framework. Injuries were classified as medical attention (requiring on-field attention without subsequent absence) or time-loss (≥1 day of participation absence). Injury incidence was calculated per 1000 h of play. Across 6364.55 h of exposure, 45 injuries were reported: 30 (66.7%) medical attention and 15 (33.3%) time-loss injuries. Injury incidence was 5.3 [1.5–11.5] per 1000 h in training (medical attention: 3.3 [0.8–7.3]; time-loss: 2.0 [0.5–4.5]) and 37.6 [8.7–83.9] per 1000 h in matches (medical attention: 28.9 [5.8–66.6]; time-loss: 8.7 [0–23.2]). Match injury incidence was significantly higher than training (rate ratio: 7.1 [1.3–31.4]). Findings suggest that injury incidence in community-based Walking Football is low, supporting its safety and potential as a sustainable physical activity strategy for middle-aged and older adults. Background/Objectives: Pressure to stay lean may lead adolescent athletes to dietary restraint and disordered eating. Lack of nutrition awareness can also contribute to suboptimal dietary habits, increasing the risk of eating disorders and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport [RED-S], though evidence in competitive athletes is limited. This study explored eating disorder symptoms and RED-S knowledge in adolescent artistic gymnasts. Methods: Eighty-four female artistic gymnasts, thirty-nine international and national level gymnasts [high-level; 14 [14, 15] y] and forty-five recreational and club level gymnasts [low-level; 14 [13, 15] y] completed the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire [EDE-Q 6.0], the RED-S knowledge Questionnaire and provided training details. Results: Seventeen gymnasts (20.2%) scored above the cutoff point on the EDE-Q. In addition, high-level gymnasts scored higher than low-level on EDE-Q [2.21 ± 1.37 (35.9%) vs. 1.19 ± 0.79 (6.7%), respectively; p < 0.001] and on its subscales: Restraint, Eating Concerns, Weight Concerns, and Shape Concerns [p < 0.001 to 0.009], thus indicating more severe disordered eating symptoms. No group differences were found in binge eating and compensatory behaviors. An important percentage of gymnasts reported at least one episode of binge eating and excessive training [39.3–58.3%], while four gymnasts reported self-induced vomiting. RED-S knowledge did not differ between groups. On average, gymnasts were unaware of correct answers related to RED-S [51.5%], its definitions [79.8–92.9%], and its association with menstrual disturbances and bone health [54.8–86.9%]. However, gymnasts reported better awareness of the impact of food restriction on illness and performance [47.6–84.5%]. Conclusions: Elite artistic gymnasts exhibited a higher prevalence of eating disorder symptoms than lower-level peers. Gymnasts at all levels demonstrated limited knowledge of the effects of RED-S on menstrual and bone health. Failure to recognize these risks may influence gymnasts’ eating behaviors and delay RED-S detection and management. Full article

Swearing, a highly emotive form of expression, has recently attracted growing interest from researchers. Yet, swearing is still largely unexamined as a form of self-talk among professional athletes, coaches, and casual exercisers. This study aims to fill that gap by creating and validating the Use of Swear Words in Sport and Exercise Questionnaire (USWSEQ), an innovative instrument intended to assess how often athletes, coaches, and recreational exercisers utilize common swear words. The questionnaire was administered to 513 participants and underwent exploratory (n = 333) and confirmatory (n = 180) factor analyses to evaluate its content structure, reliability, and validity. Results confirmed a robust two-factor model: (1) Self/Other Degradation, and (2) Situational Swearing. Notably, the study emphasizes the complexity involved in researching language, because swear words can be semantically ambiguous, pragmatically flexible, and deeply embedded in culture. These attributes present challenges for conventional psychometric methods and highlight the importance of function-based and context-aware frameworks. Full article

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction with Modified Transtibial Technique: Outcomes and Return to Sport in Athletes

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common among athletes and significantly impact their knee stability and performance. Surgical reconstruction is the standard treatment. The modified transtibial technique has emerged as a promising surgical approach for optimal graft positioning and complication reduction. Methods: A retrospective study of athletes who underwent primary ACL reconstruction with the modified transtibial technique was conducted. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the Lysholm and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective scores and objective knee stability assessments. Return-to-sport rates and associated factors were analyzed. Results: Forty-four athletes were included (thirty-seven males, seven females; mean age 21.2 ± 5.0 years). At mean follow-up of 27.0 ± 12.2 months, significant improvements in the Lysholm and IKDC subjective scores were observed. Overall, 88.2% of athletes returned to sports, and 65.9% achieved their pre-injury levels. Return to pre-injury level was defined as regaining the same type, intensity, and frequency of sport participation as before the injury occurred. Professional athletes showed significantly higher return-to-pre-injury-sport rates (79.3%) than recreational athletes (40.0%, p = 0.0091). Concomitant meniscus injuries negatively impacted return-to-sport rates (92.9% versus 66.7%, p = 0.0397). The overall failure rate was 4.6% (2/44; 95% confidence level [CI]: 0.6–15.5%) with two cases of graft insufficiency or re-rupture. Conclusions: ACL reconstruction with the modified transtibial technique provides favorable clinical outcomes, high return-to-sport rates, and low failure rates, particularly among professional athletes. Meniscus preservation is crucial for optimizing post-operative recovery. Future research should focus on long-term outcomes and comparative studies with other ACL reconstruction techniques. Improvement of recreational areas between the residential areas to achieve human behavior and the concept of humanization is urgently needed to achieve the 2030 vision of Saudi Arabia. This study aims to develop a parametric urban optimization framework to optimize the outdoor thermal comfort in outdoor recreational areas between residential buildings in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia, based on the 2030 vision of Saudi Arabia to achieve a high standard of quality of life with thermal comfort. Measurement was conducted inside the sports walking path with walk-through observation and interviews. Then, case study geometry was generated computationally, using Rhinoceros software and its plug-in Grasshopper to implement the set of development scenarios. Then, the optimization process for the case study was integrated with 192 proposed development solutions to assess the solutions’ influence in reducing the Universal Thermal Comfort Index (UTCI) and average solar irradiance, besides increasing energy generated by PV panels. EnergyPlus engine and Ladybug plug-in are used to integrate PV panels with shading scenarios, to utilize the high solar irradiation, and to calculate the generated electrical energy. The results concluded that trees with diameters between 10 and 15 m could achieve thermal comfort and reduction UTCI by 11.26 K and average solar irradiance by 642.77 W/m2 with average energy generation of PV panel and optimum inclination angle of 20°. The integration of PV with shading scenarios generates electricity for every square meter of PV panel, equal to 578.84 kWh/m2 for lighting poles and service areas within the recreational areas. The results of this study help to improve the current park as a prototype, for which results can be implemented in more than 8100 instances of gardens, parks, and municipal squares in Saudi Arabia. Swearing is a powerful and emotionally charged form of language that has recently gained increased scholarly attention. While commonly used for emotional release, its role in sport and exercise ‘self-talk’ remains understudied. Prior evidence suggests that swearing may aid in pain management, emotion regulation, and performance enhancement, yet research in athletic contexts has largely focused on conventional self-talk. To address this gap, the present study developed and validated the Reasons for Swearing in Sport and Exercise Questionnaire (RSSEQ), a novel tool assessing reasons motivating swearing among competitive athletes, coaches, and recreational exercisers. A total of 513 participants completed the RSSEQ. Exploratory (n = 333) and confirmatory (n = 180) factor analyses supported a three-factor structure: Stress and Emotional Catharsis, Mental Strength Enhancement, and Coping with Physical Discomfort and Pain. Males reported greater use of swearing for mental strength and pain-related coping, while no gender differences were observed for emotional catharsis. Athletes reported more swearing for emotional catharsis than did coaches, but no differences emerged in motivational or pain-related use. No significant differences were found between competitive and recreational athletes or between team and individual sport participants. These findings establish a foundation for future research on the psychological functions of swearing in sport and exercise, encouraging further exploration of its effectiveness and potential integration into mental training strategies, alongside more traditional self-talk approaches. This study aims to identify the prevalence and patterns of sports injuries in recreational sports activities in South Korea. This study utilized data from the “survey of safety accidents” conducted by the Korea Sports Safety Foundation and finally, 3182 recreational sports participants who experienced injuries were selected for the study. For data processing, data related to recreational sports injuries were first collected and organized using Excel 2015, and frequency analysis was conducted using the SPSS 25.0 program. Furthermore, the association rule method was applied via Python 3.13.3 to analyze the patterns of injury sites and types. First, by investigating the prevalence of injuries in recreational sports, it was found that the injury frequency was highest in soccer, followed by cycling, hiking, and badminton. Second, in soccer, it was found that when ankle injuries, which have a high injury frequency, occur, knee, toe, and sprain injuries also occur together (Lift: 1.843). Additionally, in cycling, when knee injuries occur, toe, sprain, and strain (bruise) injuries also occur together (Lift: 2.420). In mountain biking, when ankle injuries, which have a high injury frequency, occur, cuts, sprains, stab wounds (cuts), sprains, and strains (bruises) also occur together (Lift: 1.808). The current survey on recreational sports injuries is expected to be used as basic data to prevent injuries in advance for participants in recreational sports, and it is expected that this will allow them to participate in sports by recognizing common injury sites before participating in sports. Virtual reality (VR) continues to evolve, offering immersive experiences across various domains, especially in virtual training scenarios. The aim of this study is to present the development of a VR simulator and to examine its realism, usability, and acceptance by luge experts after an experiment with a VR simulation. We present a novel photogrammetry sensing to VR pipeline for the sport of luge designed with the goal to be as close to the real luge experience as possible, potentially enabling users to learn critical techniques safely prior to real-world trials. Key features of our application include realistic terrain created with photogrammetry and responsive sled dynamics. A consultation of experts from the Austrian Luge Federation led to several design improvements to the VR environment, especially based on user experience aspects such as lifelike feedback and interface responsiveness. Furthermore, user interaction was optimized to enable precise steering and maneuvering. Moreover, two learning modes were developed to accommodate user experience levels (novice and expert). The results indicated a good level of realism of the VR luge simulator. Participants reported scene, audience behavior, and sound realism scores that ranged from 3/5 to 4/5. Our findings indicated adequate usability (system usability score: 72.7, SD = 13.9). Moderate scores were observed for the acceptance of VRodel. In conclusion, our virtual luge application offers a promising avenue for exploring the potential of VR technology in delivering authentic outdoor recreation experiences that could increase safety in the sport of luge. By integrating advanced sensing, simulations, and interactive features, we aim to push the boundaries of realism in virtual lugeing and pave the way for future advancements in immersive entertainment and simulation applications. Lactobacillus plantarum Supplementation on Sport Performance, Biomarkers of Intestinal Damage, and Oxidative Stress in Recreational Athletes

Background: In recent years, interest in probiotic supplementation has increased among athletes due to its potential benefits on sports performance. Thus, the aim of this trial was to investigate Lactobacillus plantarum’s effects on sports performance, intestinal damage, and oxidative stress biomarkers. Methods: Twenty-two physically active participants, nine females and thirteen males (age: 32.8 ± 5.2 years; height: 1.73 ± 0.1 m (meters); body mass: 72.2 ± 10.3 kg (kilograms) volunteered in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel study. The participants performed a strenuous exercise session, and immediately after, their perceived exertion was assessed and blood samples were drawn to assess intestinal damage (IFABP: intestinal fatty acid binding protein) and oxidative stress (PC: protein carbonyls; TAC: total antioxidant capacity; total proteins; GSSG: glutathione disulfide; GSH: reduced glutathione and catalase). Twenty-four hours later, the participants ranked their recovery status and completed various sports performance tests: CMJ (countermovement jump), RAST (running-based anaerobic sprint), and YOYO IR1 (YOYO intermittent recovery test level 1). This was followed by a four-week supplementation period, in which the participants ingested one probiotic capsule per day containing 10 billion CFU (colony forming units) of Lactobacillus plantarum or a placebo capsule (dextrose). Results: The paired samples t-test revealed a significantly better result in the YOYO IR1 test in the probiotic group, while a significant reduction was observed in the TAC levels in the placebo group. Conclusions: The results suggest that Lactobacillus plantarum supplementation could increase YOYO IR1 sports performance test scores and may mitigate TAC value reduction. Full article

This study investigated the causes of incorrect judgments in a motor task and examined differences between students with varying levels of judgment accuracy. Twenty-two seventh graders participated. Based on their estimated and actual scores in two volleyball serve trials, students were categorized into two groups: “low accuracy” and “high accuracy”. Before each trial, they estimated their scores according to the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance test. Following the trials, students were interviewed about their justifications and their confidence in the accuracy of their judgments. Independent sample t-tests indicated that both “low accuracy” and “high accuracy” students appeared to use metacognitive skills (t(20) = 0.82, p > 0.05). However, the “low accuracy” group lacked the declarative and procedural knowledge (t(20) = 4.59, p < 0.001) necessary for accurately evaluating their performance. Findings suggest that students focused more on outcome-based rather than process-based assessments when evaluating their performance. Enhancing students’ access to both theoretical and experience-based cues in sports may improve their ability to accurately judge their performances and foster greater confidence in lifelong participation in physical activities.
