Wetland loss and human activities are forcing migratory waterbirds to rely on alternative habitats such as croplands, yet their adaptive habitat use across contrasting landscape contexts remains unclear. The Bar-headed Goose (Anser indicus) is a key indicator species in the wetland ecosystems of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. Comparing differences in its wintering habitat selection and utilization is of great significance for understanding its ecological adaptation mechanisms and formulating regional wetland conservation strategies. In this study, we compared the diurnal habitat use during the wintering period of Bar-headed Geese at three wetlands (Nianhu, Caohai, and Napahai) representing distinct landscape contexts. We used GPS satellite tracking and dynamic Brownian bridge movement modeling, combined with random forest analysis of environmental variables, to quantify diurnal habitat use and selection at each site. Our results revealed significant regional differences in habitat use. In the agriculture-dominated wetlands (Nianhu and Caohai), geese primarily utilized cropland and marsh habitats (Nianhu: cropland 45.88% ± 30.70%, marsh 42.55% ± 33.17%; Caohai: cropland 62.33% ± 12.16%, marsh 28.61% ± 13.62%). In contrast, at Napahai, which is dominated by natural habitats, geese primarily used grassland (65.92% ± 20.01%) and marsh (26.85% ± 21.88%), with minimal use of cropland (4.21% ± 7.00%). Diurnal habitat selection was influenced by multiple environmental factors, with distinct regional differences identified through random forest modeling. In Nianhu, key factors included distance to supplemental feeding site, distance to grassland, distance to woodland, and distance to open water. In Caohai, distance to grassland, distance to nocturnal roost site, distance to settlement, and distance to open water were significant drivers. In Napahai, distance to nocturnal roost site, distance to open water, and distance to marsh were the most influential (all with p < 0.01), reflecting flexible behavioral responses. Based on these findings, we recommend region-specific conservation management strategies. Specifically, supplemental feeding at Nianhu should be strictly regulated. Agricultural planning in farming areas should account for the habitat needs of wintering waterbirds. Grassland and marsh habitats at Napahai should also be more effectively protected. Full article

Understanding long-term movement ecology is critical for conserving endangered species; however, comprehensive spatiotemporal analyses remain limited. In this study, we leveraged a decade-long GPS tracking dataset (2014–2024) of 31 endangered Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon) individuals to elucidate their spatiotemporal behavioral patterns. The study focused on three key aspects: (1) fidelity to nesting, foraging, and roosting sites; (2) movement patterns and their ecological drivers; and (3) foraging habitat preferences across regions and activity periods. The results revealed exceptional fidelity to nesting, foraging (mean value = 0.253), and roosting sites (mean value = 0.261), underscoring the species’ pronounced spatial memory. Temporal factors emerged as the primary drivers of movement patterns, demonstrated by a significant annual reduction in home range size (p < 0.01) and a decline in daily flight distance in 2019 (β = −1890 ± 772 m, p < 0.05) and 2022 (p = 0.052). Behavioral factors also significantly influenced daily flight distance, with notable variations across different activity periods. Foraging habitat selection exhibited considerable spatial heterogeneity (14.2% constrained variance, p < 0.01). Cultivated lands, particularly paddy fields (Yangxian population) and drylands (Tongchuan population), served as core foraging zones. In contrast, spatiotemporal variables such as age had limited effects (<5% variance). This study provides the first empirical evidence of long-term site fidelity and habitat partitioning in the Crested Ibis, emphasizing the importance of landscape-level conservation planning. To this end, we propose two targeted strategies: establishing habitat corridors to enhance connectivity and safeguarding stable foraging areas within agricultural landscapes. These findings contribute to movement ecology theory while offering actionable frameworks for endangered species management. Full article

Coastal wetlands deliver essential ecosystem services, including cultural services, which provide non-material benefits such as recreation, education, and spiritual enrichment that are crucial for human well-being. This study investigates the cultural ecosystem services provided by a 40 ha coastal wetland in the Gulf of Manfredonia, southern Italy, within the Gargano National Park. By integrating an ecological survey of the bird community with a social survey of visitors to the King’s Lagoon Nature Reserve, the content of tailored planning strategies and management tools for the conservation of wetland biodiversity was developed. An ecological analysis of the bird community was carried out on the assumption that it could be representative of the total biodiversity observed in the wetland. On the other hand, a questionnaire was used to collect information from visitors to the reserve, highlighting the aspects of the wetland that they found most interesting and attractive according to their judgement and beliefs, and thus targeting a specific set of cultural ecological services. The two approaches were then combined to develop a comprehensive strategy. The bird community analysis led to the identification of the mixed biotope category (a combination of wetlands, aquatic/riparian ecosystems, semi-natural vegetated areas, and meadows together with agricultural areas) as the reference biotope for prioritizing wetland management. The Ardeidae family was chosen as a bird flagship group because of its high visibility, ease of identification, attractiveness to visitors, wide local distribution, and fairly constant presence in the study area throughout the year. Flagship species have a dual function: to guide conservation measures and actions by wetland managers, and to attract the interest, curiosity and active participation of potential visitors to the wetland. Based on the results, a list of guidelines for improving the birds’ habitats and providing them with resources (feeding, breeding, shelter, roosting, etc.) has been proposed. The aim of these measures is to optimize the presence and abundance of Ardeidae as flagship species, thereby preserving the biodiversity heritage in general and increasing the provision of cultural ecosystem services in the wetland. The resulting dynamic interplay ensures that both natural and cultural resources are fully and appropriately valued, protected, and maintained for the benefit of present and future generations. Describing home range and resource selection is crucial for understanding ecological needs and creating conservation programs. Still, our knowledge of spatial and behavioural ecology for most species remains limited. Here, we used satellite transmitters to investigate core and home range sizes, habitat selection, and roost characteristics in seven tawny owl males in Western Serbia during the autumn–winter period 2023. Using minimum convex polygon (MCP) and autocorrelated kernel density estimation (AKDE), we found clear variability in core area and home range sizes. Also, adult and heavier males have smaller core area and home ranges than juvenile and lightweight individuals. The Bhattacharyya coefficient showed minor home range overlap in tagged males. The final model for evaluation of habitat selection suggests that the likelihood of owl occurrence was positively correlated with the share of anthropogenic infrastructure and negatively associated with the increase in the proportion of cultivated land within the home range. However, scores of model performance metrics showed moderate predictive accuracy, implying that other unmeasured variables may dictate species presence. Our study illustrates the ecological plasticity and ability of the tawny owl to adapt to a human-modified environment while providing new information about the spatial ecology of this widespread predator in Europe. The most studied cavefish in the world is Astyanax mexicanus, and the most frequently used specimens in research come from the Pachón cave in Northeast Mexico. A recent study using the capture–mark–recapture technique revealed that the Pachón population size is only in the hundreds of individuals, not in the thousands. This result raises serious concerns about their long-term survival and highlights the need to accurately estimate the population size of other Astyanax caves. In our study, we used a well-established, non-invasive method for estimating population size: the transect sampling method, which counts the abundance of organisms along a line at regular intervals. We used the 310 m long Sabinos Cave’s Pool #1 for measurements and estimated a population of 1142 individuals. Most importantly, we found that cavefish are not distributed uniformly: 68% of the individuals were clustered under a bat roost. To corroborate this observation, we used drones to explore submerged galleries inaccessible to scientists. Results from the Toro/Calera Cave system confirmed that most galleries were essentially void of cavefish, except for in those few areas with high amounts of nutrients. Scientists visiting the most studied Astyanax localities (Pachón, Sabinos, Tinaja, and Chica) experience what appear to be high-density populations of about 10 fish/m2, possibly because the pool they visit happens to be under bat roosts. Our study shows that one cannot extrapolate the density at these localities to the rest of the habitat, where densities might be two orders of magnitude lower. Future studies should consider that the apparent high density at visited sites is overrepresenting the total population size when calculating the number of fish specimens to be captured. Full article

Insect-eating bats play a crucial role in agriculture and public health by suppressing populations of agricultural pests and disease vectors. These ecosystem services promoted by insect-eating bats are essential in a world that seeks sustainability in agricultural production and the management of urban areas. Despite Brazil’s status as one of the largest agricultural producers globally, research using insect-eating bats for pest control is lacking. This review underscores the importance of filling this knowledge gap and provides guidelines for future research. Bats exhibit diverse feeding habits and consume significant quantities of insects, including agricultural pests. While studies in the USA and Europe have highlighted insect-eating bats’ role in reducing agricultural losses, research in Brazil is limited. Challenges include the need for more advanced diet analysis techniques, such as DNA metabarcoding, and understanding bat habitat use in agricultural and urban landscapes. Research on natural and artificial roosts’ effectiveness and population dynamics is also essential. Integrating bat conservation into agricultural sustainability requires investment in technological methods, valuation of ecosystem services, population monitoring, habitat use studies and environmental education. Financial incentives and collaboration between sectors are crucial for advancing research and implementing bat-friendly practices in agriculture, ultimately enhancing biodiversity conservation and production sustainability in Brazil. In grassland ecosystems, agriculture and urbanization are two main anthropogenic disturbances to native fauna. Nature preserves at the urban-agricultural interface may include diverse vegetation habitats, providing opportunities for native fauna. Limited research has examined the conservation value of such preserves to bats. We examined bat activity patterns at multiple temporal scales at Glacier Creek Preserve in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, between 2018 and 2020 via acoustic monitoring to identify what functional habitats it might provide to bats. We placed bat detectors along the forest edge and in the open, restored native prairies and open agricultural fields. A total of nine species were recorded at the preserve, including the endangered Myotis septentrionalis. Foraging activities were recorded for six species. The edge habitat had higher overall acoustic activities for three species (Eptesicus fuscus, Lasiurus borealis, and Lasiurus cinereus) and a higher proportion of foraging activities for two species (Lasiurus borealis and Lasiurus cinereus) than the open habitat. Lasiurus cinereus displayed activity peaks early at night, whereas Lasiurus borealis had activity peaks late. Results suggest that a medium-sized nature preserve at the urban-agricultural interface can provide roosts, commuting corridors, and foraging grounds for different bats. The conservation value of such nature preserves should not be overlooked. Full article

Aerial wildlife surveys with fixed-wing airplanes and helicopters are used more often than on-the-ground field surveys to cover areas that are both extensive and often inaccessible. Drones with high-resolution thermal sensors are being widely accepted as research tools to aid in monitoring wildlife species and their habitats. Therefore, our goal was to assess the feasibility of detecting northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus, hereafter ‘bobwhite’) using drones with a high-resolution thermal sensor. Our objectives were (1) to identify the altitudes at which bobwhites can be detected and (2) compare the two most used color palettes to detect species (black-hot and isotherm). We achieved this goal by performing drone flights at different altitudes over caged tame bobwhites and capturing still images and video recordings at altitudes from 18 to 42 m. We did not observe or detect any obvious signs of distress, movement, or fluttering of bobwhites inside cages caused by the noise or presence of the drone during data acquisition. We observed the highest counts of individual bobwhites with the black-hot thermal palette at 18 m (92%; x¯ = 47 bobwhites; SE = 0.41) and at 24 m (81%; x¯ = 41 bobwhites; SE = 0.89). The isotherm thermal palette had lower count proportions. The use of video to count quail was not feasible due to the low resolution of the video and the species size. Flying drones with high-resolution thermal sensors provided reliable imagery to detect roosting bobwhite individuals in South Texas during the winter. Full article

Woodland bat assemblages are usually structured in a space according to the distance from the ground, water, and obstacles, features that often define chiropteran hunting tactics. Consequently, the bat species composition differs strongly among various habitats, even within the same forest patch. However, when conducting local bat surveys in Wolin National Park (WPN), we revealed an unexpected uniformity in the qualitative and quantitative structure of bat assemblages, based on mist netting and ultrasound recording. In total, 10 vespertilionid species were detected. Across all methods and sampled habitats, a single species, Pipistrellus pygmaeus, predominated, while no Barbastella barbastellus, an old forest specialist, were detected, despite the abundance of their preferred daily roosts. We also reviewed the literature for mist-netted bat samples in four different habitats in lowland Polish forests. The samples usually clustered based on habitats, and the same habitat classes often clustered very closely despite representing geographically distant forests. The exception was WPN, where all four habitat classes formed a tightly packed cluster. We hypothesize that P. pygmaeus might act as a hyperabundant native species, a successful generalist that reduces the contribution of more specialized taxa in the assemblage. It probably benefits from both forest renaturation and anthropogenic cross-boundary subsidy. Full article

Psittaciformes are one of the bird orders with the highest number of threatened species and the most marked declining population trends. At present, the lack of information on the population size, reproductive fraction, and productivity of most parrot populations makes it difficult to design effective conservation actions. In this study, we monitored a population of Burrowing Parrots (Cyanoliseus patagonus) breeding in urbanized habitats in the southwest of Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Every December and February from 2018 to 2023, we counted the individuals arriving at a single communal roost, located in the main park of Bahía Blanca city, which gathers all the parrots breeding in 18–22 colonies within a radius of 20 km. Censuses were conducted before (December) and immediately after the incorporation of juveniles into the flocks (February). Breeding pairs were also counted annually in the colonies, and the average annual productivity and the proportion of juveniles were estimated from surveys in pre-roosting and feeding areas in February. The non-breeding fraction approached half of the population with no statistically significant differences among years (range: 37–53%), and the breeding population showed little annual variation, with a minimum of 1363 and a maximum of 1612 breeding pairs. The proportion of juveniles in the flocks and the estimated productivity showed larger variations among breeding seasons. Our results add insight to the scarce information available on the breeding-to-non-breeding-population ratios in parrots, and birds in general, and show key breeding parameters for a species that is thriving well in urban habitats. Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus), Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus), and Wilson’s Plover (Charadrius wilsonia) are imperiled species that overlap in both their range and habitat outside the breeding season. The purpose of this research was to document the abundance of these species at a barrier island in Southwest Florida, USA, and to examine the influence of tide and wind on both their abundance and foraging. We walked ~700 m surveys through tidal mudflat and adjacent beach semiweekly at 0730–1030 from 24 September 2021–4 March 2022. During these 38 surveys, Piping Plovers were the most abundant of the three species, and the average number counted was 34 (SD 17.3) compared with 11 (SD 6.3) Snowy Plovers and 14 (SD 14.1) Wilson’s Plovers. All of the species were more likely to be found on the mudflats during low tides and the beach during high tides. Our findings suggest the high densities of Piping, Snowy, and Wilson’s Plover are due to a mudflat habitat that provides high availability of prey, a beach habitat that provides a relatively safe location to roost, and the context of the barrier island, which is surrounded by other suitable habitats. While each species used the barrier island’s habitats slightly differently, the high densities of all three species present an opportunity to have a large conservation impact by protecting this dynamic area. Four species (Eptesicus anatolicus, Plecotus auritus, Myotis brandtii and Rousettus aegyptiacus) have a limited distribution in the country and the presence of one species (Myotis mystacinus) requires verification. The present study summarises all existing knowledge and adds several hundred new records on the distribution of bats of Greece. Additionally, it provides a summary of new insights on various aspects of their roosting ecology, foraging habitat use, altitudinal distribution, winter activity and landscape characteristics around major roosts. Finally, it discusses the current research and conservation needs of Greek bats. Full article

The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a frequent dominant species in European wetlands. Yet, its performance can vary in response to different combinations of environmental factors. This accounts for P. australis decline on deep-water sites, its stable performance in constructed wetlands with subsurface horizontal flow and its expansion in wet meadows. Reed stands provide habitats for nesting, feeding or roosting of vulnerable bird species. Conservation measures aim at preventing or stopping the decline of P. australis stands, increasing their micro-habitat heterogeneity and reducing the reed penetration into wet meadows. Service-oriented measures aim at providing suitable conditions for direct use of reed stalks for roof thatching or as a renewable energy crop or the use of the reed-dominated habitats for waterfowl hunting, cattle grazing or fishing. The compatibility between nature conservation and different socioeconomic uses can be promoted by collective agreements, agri-environmental contracts or payments for ecosystem services of the reedbeds. In situations with multiple uses, a modelling approach considering the participation of all the stakeholders concerned can be a useful tool for resolving conflicts and developing a shared vision of the respective socio-ecosystem. Habitat suitability is crucial to ensure the long-term persistence of species and can be identified based on relationships between species occurrences and underlying abiotic and biotic factors. We identified potential nesting habitat for the Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) in Nepal using ecological niche modeling with climatic variables. We estimated the currently suitable nesting habitat for Egyptian vulture in Nepal at 38,204 km2. We found a high probability of suitable nesting habitat on east-facing aspects, and the probability of a suitable nesting habitat was greater in more mountainous areas, particularly in central and western regions of Nepal. Precipitation was a major factor for predicting probability of the presence of nest sites for Egyptian vultures. After identifying potentially suitable habitat, we identified environmental factors affecting landscape-level suitable nesting habitat for Egyptian vultures using generalized linear models. For Egyptian vultures, sites near forests and human settlements were most suitable for nesting, roosting, and foraging, especially in central and western Nepal. Based on potentially suitable nesting habitat and previous work on Egyptian vulture foraging and roosting habitat, we recommend protecting forests near water sources and open areas for their long-term conservation. Information on the day-time roost areas of North Island brown kiwi (NIBK) (Apteryx mantelli), particularly post-translocation, is limited. This study aimed to determine the day-time roost areas of newly translocated NIBK and compare these with birds that had established from a translocation in the previous year. Radio telemetry was used to monitor sub-adult NIBK in the first three weeks post-translocation simultaneously with birds released in the previous year. The data from 15 birds (nine translocated in 2014 and six translocated in 2013) were used to calculate the area over which roost sites were distributed. Areas were estimated using Minimum Convex Polygon (MCP, Ha) and 50 percentile kernel density estimation (KDE, Ha). No significant difference in MCP was determined between newly translocated 2014 birds (21.3 Ha, SE 7.92) and those translocated in 2013 (22.85 Ha, SE 10.84) or between KDE50 for 2013 birds (16.30 Ha, SE 7.44) compared with 2014 birds (20.66 Ha, SE 8.29). Within the first three weeks post-translocation, most of the 2014 birds remained within the vicinity of their release site, which may be due to a combination of suitable habitat/roost sites and the ‘anchoring’ effect of previously established 2013 birds. This study provides new information on roost areas of newly translocated NIBK and highlights the importance of post-translocation monitoring. Full article
