The European mink Mustela lutreola is one of the most threatened carnivores in Europe, having suffered dramatic range contractions and severe population fragmentation. Accurate knowledge of its genetic diversity is crucial for conservation planning, yet earlier studies based on partial mitochondrial markers offered limited resolution and often underestimated haplotype richness. In this study, complete mitochondrial genomes from four extant populations (Russia, n = 11; Romania, n = 16; Germany, n = 24; France–Spain, n = 15) were analysed using a suite of non-parametric and asymptotic estimators (Fisher’s α, ACE, Jackknife1, Bootstrap, Chao1-based iNEXT) together with negative binomial modelling. A total of 41 haplotypes were detected, but extrapolated estimates indicated substantially higher richness, particularly in populations dominated by singletons. Rarefaction and extrapolation analyses revealed that sample sizes of 70–130 individuals per population are needed to approach complete haplotype detection. The France–Spain and Romania populations harboured the highest predicted richness, whereas Germany and Russia, both represented by ex situ stocks, showed lower diversity. These results refine earlier assumptions of extreme homogeneity in the Western population and demonstrate that significant mitochondrial variation persists at the continental scale. The study provides quantitative benchmarks for sampling design and genetic management, supporting preservation of evolutionary potential in this critically endangered species. Full article

The rising demand for sustainable agriculture and circular resource management has intensified interest in converting wastewater sludge into value-added products. This review explores the transformation of sewage sludge into slow- and controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs), with a focus on biochar production and encapsulation technologies. Sewage sludge is rich in essential macronutrients (N, P, K), micronutrients, and organic matter, making it a promising feedstock for agricultural applications. However, its use is constrained by challenges including compositional variability, presence of heavy metals, pathogens, and emerging contaminants such as microplastics and PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances). The manuscript discusses a range of stabilization and conversion techniques, such as composting, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, hydrothermal carbonization, and nutrient recovery from incinerated sludge ash. Special emphasis is placed on coating and encapsulation technologies that regulate nutrient release, improve fertilizer efficiency, and reduce environmental losses. The role of natural, synthetic, and biodegradable polymers in enhancing release mechanisms is analyzed in the context of agricultural performance and soil health. While these technologies offer environmental and agronomic benefits, large-scale adoption is hindered by technical, economic, and regulatory barriers. The review highlights key challenges and outlines future perspectives, including the need for advanced coating materials, improved contaminant mitigation strategies, harmonized regulations, and field-scale validation of CRFs. Overall, the valorisation of sewage sludge into CRFs presents a viable strategy for nutrient recovery, waste minimization, and sustainable food production. With continued innovation and policy support, sludge-based fertilizers can become a critical component of the green transition in agriculture. Full article

In the era of big data, the rapid proliferation of user-generated content enriched with geolocations offers new perspectives and datasets for probing the spatiotemporal dynamics of tourist mobility. Mining large-scale geospatial traces has become central to tourism geography: it reveals preferences for attractions and routes to enable intelligent recommendation, enhance visitor experience, and advance smart tourism, while also informing spatial planning, crowd management, and sustainable destination development. Using Mount Huangshan—a UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site—as a case study, we integrate GPS trajectories and geo-tagged photographs from 2017–2023. We apply a Density-Field Hotspot Detector (DF-HD), a Space–Time Cube (STC), and spatial gridding to analyze behavior from temporal, spatial, and fully spatiotemporal perspectives. Results show a characteristic “double-peak, double-trough” seasonal pattern in the number of GPS tracks, cumulative track length, and geo-tagged photos. Tourist behavior exhibits pronounced elevation dependence, with clear vertical differentiation. DF-HD efficiently delineates hierarchical hotspot areas and visitor interest zones, providing actionable evidence for demand-responsive crowd diversion. By integrating sequential time slices with geography in a 3D framework, the STC exposes dynamic spatiotemporal associations and evolutionary regularities in visitor flows, supporting real-time crowd diagnosis and optimized spatial resource allocation. Comparative findings further confirm that Huangshan’s seasonal intensity is significantly lower than previously reported, while the high agreement between trajectory density and gridded photos clarifies the multi-tier clustering of route popularity. These insights furnish a scientific basis for designing secondary tour loops, alleviating pressure on core areas, and charting an effective pathway toward internal structural optimization and sustainable development of the Mount Huangshan Scenic Area. This research presents an optimized control strategy for the coordinated operation of parallel grid connected photovoltaic (PV) plants and an On Load Tap Changer (OLTC) transformer. The proposed framework integrates inverter-level active and reactive power dispatch with OLTC tap control through an Energy Management System (EMS) based on an improved Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm. The EMS minimizes operational costs while maintaining voltage stability and respecting electrical and mechanical constraints. Comparative analyses with Monte Carlo, fmincon, and conventional TLBO methods demonstrate that the optimized TLBO achieves up to two orders of magnitude faster convergence and higher robustness, enabling more reliable performance under variable irradiance and load conditions. Simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) results confirm that the coordinated OLTC inverter control significantly enhances reactive power capability and voltage regulation. The proposed optimized TLBO based EMS offers an effective and computationally efficient solution for dynamic energy management in medium scale PV systems, supporting grid reliability and maximizing renewable energy utilization. The fragile karst ecosystem in Southwest China faces severe water scarcity. Since 2000, large-scale ecological restoration programs (e.g., the “Grain for Green” Program) have substantially increased vegetation coverage. Concurrently, climate change has manifested as a distinct warming trend and heightened drought risk in recent decades. Therefore, understanding the synergistic and competing effects of climate change and vegetation restoration on regional evapotranspiration (ET) is critical for projecting water budgets and ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems and water resources within this vital ecological barrier region. This study employs a dual-scenario PT-JPL model (simulating natural vegetation dynamics versus constant coverage) integrated with Sen + MK trend analysis to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of ET and its components—canopy transpiration (ETc), interception evaporation (ETi), and soil evaporation (ETs)—in Southwest China’s karst region (2000–2018). Furthermore, multiple regression analysis and SEM were utilized to investigate the driving mechanisms of vegetation and climatic factors (temperature, precipitation, radiation, and relative humidity) on changes in ET and its components. The key results demonstrate the following: (1) Vegetation restoration exerted a net positive effect on total ET (+0.44 mm/a) through enhanced ETi (+0.22 mm/a) and ETs (+0.37 mm/a), despite reducing ETc (−0.08 mm/a), revealing trade-offs in water allocation. (2) Radiation dominated ET variability (66.45% of the area exhibiting >50% contribution), while temperature exhibited the most extensive spatial dominance (44.02% of the region), and relative humidity exhibited drought-mediated dual effects (promoting ETi while suppressing ETc). (3) Precipitation exhibited minimal direct influence. Vegetation restoration and climate change collectively drive ET dynamics, with ETc declines indicating potential water stress. These findings elucidate the synergistic regulation of vegetation restoration and climate change on karst ecohydrology, providing critical insights for water resource management in fragile ecosystems globally. Spatializing crop yield statistical data with administrative divisions as the basic unit helps reveal the spatial distribution characteristics of crop yield and provides necessary spatial information to support field management and government decision-making. However, owing to an insufficient understanding of the factors affecting yield, accurately depicting its spatial differences remains challenging. Taking Hailun city, Heilongjiang Province, as an example, this study proposes a yield downscaling method based on the standardized deviation from the mean of the comprehensive crop condition index (CCCI) during key phenological periods of the growing season. First, Sentinel-2 remote sensing data were used to retrieve crop condition parameters during key phenological periods, and the CCCI was constructed using the correlation between crop condition parameters in key phenological periods and statistical yield as the weight. Subsequently, regression analysis and the entropy weight method were applied to determine the spatiotemporal dynamic weights of the CCCI during key phenological stages and to calculate the standardized deviation from the mean. By combining these two components, the comprehensive spatial difference index of the crop growth condition (CSDICGC) was derived, which offered a new way to characterize the discrepancies between the pixel-level yield and statistical yield, thereby downscaling the yield statistical data from the administrative unit to the pixel scale. The results indicated that this method achieved a regional accuracy close to 100%, with a strong fit at the pixel scale. Pixel-level accuracy validation against ground-truth maize yield data resulted in an R2 of 0.82 and a mean relative error (MRE) of 4.75%. The novelty of this study was characterized by the integration of multistage crop condition parameters with dynamic spatiotemporal weighting to overcome the limitations of single-index methods. The crop yield statistical data downscaling spatialization method proposed in this paper is simple and efficient and has the potential to be popularized and applied over relatively large regions. Background/Objectives: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is commonly applied to manage refractory intracranial hypertension in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, its role and benefits in pediatric populations remain uncertain. Clarifying whether DC provides measurable clinical advantages in children with severe TBI may inform treatment strategies and family counseling. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, one-to-one matched cohort study at a tertiary pediatric center (2014–2023). Fifty-three children with severe TBI who underwent DC were matched with fifty-three non-DC patients based on age, Glasgow Coma Scale score, cranial CT findings, and pupillary response at admission to ensure comparable injury severity. Demographic data, clinical features, and outcomes were collected. Primary outcomes were in-hospital mortality and Pediatric Cerebral Performance Category (PCPC) scores at discharge and 3 months. Secondary outcomes included duration of mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and total hospital stay. Results: Mortality did not differ significantly between DC and non-DC groups (17.0% vs. 26.4%, p = 0.239). DC patients had better PCPC scores at discharge (p = 0.029). At 3 months, the between-group difference was not statistically significant but showed a near-significant trend (p = 0.057). No significant differences were observed in duration of ventilation (p = 0.100), ICU stay (p = 0.348), or hospital stay (p = 0.678). Conclusions: DC may not reduce short-term mortality in pediatric severe TBI but appears to be associated with more favorable neurological outcomes at discharge. Larger, adequately powered studies with standardized monitoring and longer follow-up are needed to clarify the durability and scope of potential benefits in this population. Full article

The Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) is an opportunistic invasive species in the Mediterranean that is negatively affecting biodiversity, fisheries, and tourism. In Italy, it is appreciated for its good meat quality, but the processing yield is low (21.87 ± 2.38%), generating a significant amount of by-products (72.45 ± 4.08%), which are underutilized. Valorizing this biomass is in line with circular economy principles and can improve both environmental and economic sustainability. This study aimed to valorize Atlantic blue crab by-products (BCBP), producing protein hydrolysates and assessing their in vitro bioactivities, in order to plan applications in animal food and related sectors. BCBP hydrolysates were obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis using Alcalase and Protamex enzymes. The treatment with Alcalase resulted in a higher degree of hydrolysis (DH = 23% in 205 min) compared to Protamex (DH = 14% in 175 min). Antioxidant activity of the hydrolisates was evaluated through DPPH, ABTS, reducing power and FRAP assays, as well as in vitro test in fibroblasts (HS-68). At 10 mg/mL, hydrolysates from both enzymes exhibited the maximum radical scavenging activity in DPPH and ABTS assays. In HS-68 cells, 0.5 mg/mL hydrolysates protected against H2O2-induced oxidative stress, showing a cell viability comparable to cells treated with 0.5 mM N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), as an antioxidant. Statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA followed by Student–Newman–Keuls (SNK) or Games–Howell post hoc tests, with significance set at p < 0.05. Overall, both enzymes efficiently hydrolyzed BCBP proteins, generating hydrolysates with significant antioxidant activity and cytoprotective effects. These results demonstrate the potential to produce high-quality bioactive compounds from BCBPs, suitable for food, nutraceutical, and health applications. Scaling up this valorization process represents a viable strategy to improve sustainability and add economic value to the management of this invasive species, turning a problem in a resource. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects not only patients but also their informal caregivers. Enhancing caregiver resilience may improve both caregiver well-being and patient outcomes. This study aimed to assess resilience levels in caregivers of individuals with IBD and identify key psychological and contextual predictors, including caregiver contributions to self-care, self-efficacy, and perceived care load. A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted across nine IBD outpatient clinics in Italy. Caregiver resilience was measured using the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 25). Additional tools included the Caregiver Contribution to Self-Care of Chronic Illness Inventory (CC-SC-CII) and Caregiver Self-Efficacy in Contributing to Patient Self-Care Scale (CSE-CSC). Robust regression models identified predictors of total resilience and its subdomains. Among 275 caregivers (median age 53; 58.2% female) CD-RISC-25 levels were moderately high (median = 74 [IQR = 65–84]), with no significant differences between those caring for patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. SEM analyses showed that self-efficacy significantly predicted contributions to disease monitoring and management, but not maintenance. In turn, the management dimension was significantly associated with higher levels of resilience across four of five domains (trust, control, acceptance of change, and spirituality), while maintenance was uniquely associated with personal competence. Predictors including education and employment status showed no significant direct or indirect effects on CC-SC-CII. In conclusion, caregiver resilience in IBD is positively associated with self-efficacy and active engagement in disease management. Targeted support strategies may strengthen caregiver resources and promote sustainable care. Full article

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) depends on patients’ self-management abilities, supported by nursing interventions that extend beyond technical skills to include psychosocial and educational domains. Evidence from Saudi Arabia on how these behaviors relate to clinical and quality-of-life outcomes remains limited. Aim: To assess self-management behaviors among adult PD patients, examine their associations with clinical and quality-of-life outcomes, and explore the mediating role of emotional well-being, with implications for nursing practice. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 158 adult PD patients at King Saud University-affiliated centers in Riyadh. Validated Arabic versions of the Chronic Illness Self-Management Scale and KDQOL-SF were administered. Clinical indicators were extracted from medical records. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, multivariate linear regression, and mediation analysis. Results: Technical skills achieved the highest self-management scores (mean 3.78 ± 0.62), while emotional coping was lowest (mean 2.71 ± 0.69). Participants with higher self-management had fewer hospitalizations (0.9 ± 0.5 vs. 1.6 ± 0.8, p = 0.01), higher serum albumin (3.60 ± 0.56 vs. 3.44 ± 0.61 g/dL, p = 0.04), and better emotional well-being (60.1 ± 14.9 vs. 55.3 ± 12.4, p = 0.03) than their counterparts. Educational level (β = 0.208, p = 0.001) and emotional well-being (β = 0.197, p = 0.001) were independent predictors of self-management, with partial mediation by emotional well-being (indirect β = 0.062, p = 0.004). Conclusions/Clinical Implications: Optimizing nursing support for PD patients requires moving beyond technical instruction to address health literacy, emotional resilience, and culturally sensitive education. Nurse-led interventions integrating psychosocial support with skill-building may enhance self-management, reduce hospitalizations, and improve quality of life in PD populations. Full article

Throughout history, cultural heritage has accumulated, and is often embodied in monuments, structures, and notable figures. Cultural heritage preservation and management also include digitalization, allowing tangible monuments to be managed as digital inventory with “digital twins”. This provides innovative ways to experience and interact with the real world, in particular by using modern mobile devices. The digitalization of monuments opens new ways to produce decorative items based on the shape of the monuments. Usually, decorative items are produced by craft businesses, family-run for generations, with specialized skills in metal and stone processing. We developed and tested a methodological proposal for frugal innovation: how to produce decorative items with minimal costs based on digital twins, which are particularly in demand in tourism-driven countries like Croatia. A micro-business with three employees, specializing in “metal art,” aims to innovate and expand by producing small-scale replicas of cultural heritage objects, such as busts, statues, monuments, or profiles. A method has been developed to create replicas in the desired material and at a desired scale, faithfully reproducing the original—whether based on a physical object, 3D model, or photograph. The results demonstrate that this sustainable frugal innovation can be successfully implemented using affordable tools and licenses. Full article

Research on Optimal Water Resource Allocation in Inland River Basins Based on Spatiotemporal Evolution Characteristics of Blue and Green Water—Taking the Taolai River Basin of the Heihezi Water System as an Example

Water demand has increased due to population growth and rapid socioeconomic development, creating conflicts between human activities and water resources and having a substantial impact on the balance between blue and green water supplies. Existing study lacks a spatial perspective to examine the inherent relationship between blue and green water supply and demand, particularly in terms of geographical differentiation characteristics and rational allocation of blue and green water supply–demand balance in inland river basins. Using the Taolai River Basin as a case study, this research uses the distributed hydrological model SWAT from a blue–green water resources viewpoint to simulate the spatiotemporal distribution features of blue and green water resources at the sub-basin scale from 2002 to 2021. The supply and demand balance relationship of blue and green water resources within the basin was investigated, an assessment index system for water resource security was developed, and the realizable potential of blue water resources was quantified using various indicators. The findings show that during the study period, the average annual green water resources in the Taolai River Basin were 1.95 times greater than blue water resources, making green water the most abundant component of regional water resources. Spatially, both blue and green water resources showed considerable latitudinal zonality, with a declining tendency from south to north and very consistent distribution patterns. Blue water resources showed high geographic variability, with a safety index more than one, suggesting that supply–demand imbalances were most concentrated in the upper and intermediate ranges of the irrigated region, as well as the desert zone, where safety levels were relatively low. In contrast, green water resources had a safety score ranging from 0.7 to 1.0, indicating great overall safety and negligible regional variability. During the research period, the average annual theoretical transferable blue water resources were 4.06 × 108 m3, based on cross-regional water resource allocation potential analysis. This reveals tremendous potential for enhancing regional water resource allocation, hence providing substantial support for effective water consumption within the Taolai River Basin and regional economic growth. In conclusion, the assessment method developed in this work provides a solid foundation for improving water resource allocation and sustainable management in river basins. It provides technical assistance in the construction of water network systems in inland river basins, which is critical in establishing reasonable water resource distribution across various areas within these basins. Health Literacy and Medication Adherence Among Low-Income Older Adults in the Inner Center of Portugal: A Questionnaire-Based Study

Introduction: Health literacy (HL) is a key determinant of health outcomes, particularly among vulnerable populations such as low-income older adults. Limited HL is associated with poor understanding of medication instructions and lower medication adherence, which can compromise therapeutic success. This study aims to assess the levels of HL and medication adherence among low-income older adults and to analyse the relationship between HL, medication adherence, and other determinants. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among low-income older adults in Portugal’s Beira and Serra Estrela Region. HL was assessed using the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-PT), and medication adherence was measured with the Adherence to Treatment Measure (MAT) scale. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlations, ordinal logistic regression, and linear regression were used to analyse associations between HL, adherence, and sociodemographic and health factors. Results: Of 196 participants, most had problematic or inadequate HL (87.8%). Medication adherence was relatively high (mean = 5.37, SD = 0.54). HL was positively associated with medication adherence (R = 0.260, p < 0.001), education (R = 0.277, p < 0.001), and ability to pay expenses (R = 0.235, p = 0.002) and negatively with age (R = −0.179, p = 0.019), poor health status (R = −0.237, p = 0.002), and difficulty affording medication (R = −0.389, p < 0.001). Completion of the third cycle of primary education predicted higher HL (OR = 1.939, 95% CI: 0.088–3.790, p = 0.040); the ability to pay expenses predicted better adherence (B = 0.101, 95% CI: 0.014–0.187, p = 0.022). Conclusions: Low HL remains a significant barrier among low-income older adults in Portugal, despite generally high medication adherence. Education and financial stability are key determinants to HL and adherence. Interventions should integrate HL promotion with efforts to reduce socioeconomic barriers and support medication management in the vulnerable populations. Full article

The Moderating Role of Resilience in the Relationship Between Occupational Stressors and Psychological Distress Among Aviation Pilots in Pakistan

Background: Aviation is one of the most demanding professions, exposing pilots to persistent stressors such as fatigue, irregular schedules, and high safety responsibility. These conditions heighten vulnerability to depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS), yet the protective mechanisms mitigating such effects remain less well understood. Objective: This study examined the roles of resilience, coping strategies, and fatigue in predicting DAS among commercial airline pilots. Method: A sample of 200 pilots completed validated self-report measures: the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). Data were analyzed using bivariate correlations, hierarchical multiple regression, and mediation/moderation analyses via the PROCESS macro. Results: Resilience was negatively correlated with total DAS scores (r = −0.46, p < 0.001), while fatigue (r = 0.42, p < 0.001) and avoidance coping (r = 0.38, p < 0.001) were positively correlated. The regression model accounted for 46% of the variance in DAS (R2 = 0.46). Task-focused coping predicted lower stress levels, whereas avoidance coping predicted higher anxiety and depression. Resilience moderated the relationship between stress and depression, buffering the impact of stress on mood outcomes. Mediation analyses indicated that coping styles partially explained the protective effect of resilience. ANOVA results confirmed that pilots with high resilience reported significantly lower depression scores than those with medium or low resilience, F(2, 197) = 6.72, p < 0.01. Conclusions: Resilience emerged as both a direct and indirect buffer against psychological strain in aviation. These findings underscore the importance of promoting adaptive coping and resilience training, alongside effective fatigue management, to enhance pilot well-being and maintain safety in aviation systems. The agro-industry is among the largest methane emitters, posing a critical challenge for sustainability. In rural areas, producers lack effective technologies to manage daily organic waste. Anaerobic digestion (AD) offers a circular pathway by converting waste into biogas and biofertilizers; however, its adoption is limited by inappropriate designs and insufficient operational control. Theoretical-applied research addresses these barriers by improving the design and operation of small-scale biodigesters, elevating pH and Electrical Conductivity (EC) from passive indicators to first-order control variables. Based on the design of a compact biodigester previously validated in the Chillón Valley and replicated in Huaycán under a utility model patent process (INDECOPI, Exp. 001087-2025/DIN), a stoichiometric NaHCO3 strategy with joint pH–EC monitoring was formalized, defining operational windows (pH 6.92–6.97; EC 6200–6300 μS/cm and dose–response curves (0.3–0.4 kg/day for 3–4 day) to buffer VFA shocks and preserve methanogenic ionic strength. The system achieved stable productions of 370–462 L/day, surpassing the theoretical potential of 352.88 L/day calculated by Buswell’s equation. A multivariable predictive model (linear, quadratic, interaction terms pH × EC, temperature, and loading rate) was developed and validated with field data: R2 = 0.78; MAPE = 2.7%; MAE = 11.2 L/day; RMSE = 13.8 L/day; r = 0.89; residuals normally distributed (Shapiro–Wilk p = 0.79). The proposed approach enables daily decision-making in low-instrumentation environments and provides a replicable and scalable pathway for the safe valorization of organic waste in rural areas. The design consolidates the shift from reactive to proactive and co-optimized pH–EC control, laying the foundation not only for standardized protocols and training in rural systems but also for improved environmental sustainability.
