2021 July-1 - 533 articles

Cover Story: Inferences from conventional statistical models of health outcomes observed across census tracts, counties, and other areal units are premised on the possession of accurate data, but small area covariate data are typically survey-based. This study examines systematic spatial and social patterns in the reliability of American Community Survey data, summarizes the threats such patterns pose to inferences, and introduces a workflow and modeling strategy for population health research with small area data. To demonstrate the feasibility and import of this approach, the study measures socio-spatial inequality in all-cause county mortality rates using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes. Ignoring data quality can bias inferences, and the widespread adoption of workflows and modeling strategies to address this challenge is warranted. View this paper.
