Future Internet, Volume 16, Issue 1

2024 January - 35 articles

Cover Story: Exploring the security of widely used open-source 5G projects, such as Open5GS and Open Air Interface, represents an important step in uncovering security gaps. In particular, the experimental study on externally exposed Network Functions, such as AMF and NRF/NEF, may help to understand the pivotal role of Mobile Network Operators in implementing robust security measures. Amidst the shift to Network Function Virtualization, the experimental study underscores secure development practices to enhance 5G network function integrity. It highlights the importance of scrutinizing security in open-source 5G projects, offering insights for MNOs to establish effective security measures. The empirical investigation identifies potential vulnerabilities, guiding future enhancements and standards releases. View this paper
