Cover Story: Automation and data exchange in manufacturing are enabled by emerging technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and cyber-physical systems. To support data-driven decision making in the so-called “Industry 4.0”, new data-driven methods and algorithms are emerging to support operators in making informed, optimal decisions about maintenance and operational actions. Fueled by advanced cyber-physical systems, as well as cloud technologies for processing and storing data, next-generation decision making for maintenance, which is examined in this article, will be increasingly more responsive and capable of facilitating accurate and proactive decisions.
