Cover Story: In this study, we designed 3 demonstrations with 2 design principles, namely POE-task (predict–observe–explain) and the particle perspective, to help students to master structure–property reasoning. In these demonstrations, the properties of metals, salts, and molecular compounds are shown by the teacher. The students had to model the structure models and used these models to explain the shown properties. Results showed that after the demonstrations, students were more aware of the structure models at the micro-level. Qualitative data of Sally, a 16-year-old student, showed how she made interesting progress in modeling micro-level chemical structures. As we used conventional demonstrations as a starting point for design, this could well serve as a practical tool for teachers to redesign their existing demonstrations. View this paper
