Cover Story: β-Galactosylceramidase (GALC) is a lysosomal enzyme involved in sphingolipid metabolism. Previous observations have shown that GALC exerts pro-oncogenic activity in human melanoma. Here, we investigated the impact of GALC overexpression on the proteomic landscape of BRAF-mutated human melanoma cell lines by mass spectrometry analysis. The data indicate that GALC overexpression causes the upregulation/downregulation of 172/99 proteins in GALC-transduced cells when compared to controls. These proteins belong to various biological processes that include RNA metabolism, cell organelle fate, and intracellular redox status. Overall, these data provide novel insights about the pro-oncogenic function of sphingolipid metabolizing enzymes in melanoma. View this paper
