Cover Story: The laser welding of Ni-Ti-based shape-memory alloys has become well established and extends the manufacturability of highly functional components. However, only a few studies have been published findings on joining thin foils, which are important for microsystem technology. Likewise, oscillating laser beam movement has not been systematically investigated to date in regard to Ni-Ti alloys, although it has shown advantages for numerous other materials concerning microstructures and the mechanical properties of the weld. The research results of this contribution demonstrate how shape, microstructure and hardness of the weld can be influenced by the oscillation parameters of the laser beam. The analysis of the weld material with chip calorimetry revealed that the beam oscillation had fewer effects on the change in transformation points compared to a linear beam movement. View this paper
