Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Chronic illnesses are increasing and represent a major threat to global health. In response to the growing number of individuals with chronic disease, the World Health Organization has promoted different strategies to improve population health and sustain healthcare systems worldwide (World Health Organization, 2018). Nevertheless, healthcare systems need to be better prepared to respond to the care demands of people affected by chronic illnesses.

Identification and awareness of appropriate care pathways for individuals with chronic disease may guide clinicians in implementing efficacious care processes and improving care outcomes and quality of care. Additionally, a collection of research on this topic can enable the further development of theories and instruments and sustain academic education in this area.

This Special Issue of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) intends to collect available research on chronic illnesses, present the current state of knowledge and promote the dissemination of successful care pathways.

We look for papers advancing insights into innovation, issues and challenges related to chronic care pathways and public health, including pediatric and older adult individuals. We welcome papers that bring together international scholars from different disciplines in the caring sciences, research and academics, and forward reflections from different theoretical and methodological perspectives, to advance knowledge and practice in chronic care pathways. Original research articles, literature reviews, methodological papers, study protocols, case reports, position papers and brief reports are welcomed.

We hope this Special Issue will include points of view from different professions and embrace a diverse range of research.
