Road Safety: Public Health Challenge

Dear Colleagues,

Road traffic crashes are a leading cause of death and injuries across the globe, imposing not only safety problems but also great risks to public health. While the mission to solve road safety problems is ongoing, i.e., through reducing or even eliminating traffic crash fatalities and injuries, new safety issues have emerged, along with the global and regional changes in the social and economic environment. The deployment of new transport modes or tools also brings new challenges for road users and their safety on roads. In the past decade, a variety of new technologies, engineering and policy solutions have been developed and implemented to improve road safety. However, the long-term positive and negative impacts of these solutions need to be examined, especially through a well-rounded, multi-disciplinary lens.

The Special Issue focuses on the investigation of the road safety problems that have risen in the past 10 years, the potential new road safety challenges that may emerge in the future, and the positive and negative impacts brought by the solutions that have been used or proposed to solve the problems. The Special Issue aims to help academic, industry and government practitioners to better understand the current and near-future road safety problems and possible solutions to tackle them by embracing a systematic evaluation approach.

The topics of interest in this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

• The impact of social and economic environments on road safety;
• Road safety issues related to new transport modes and tools;
• Innovative road safety evaluation approach;
• New road safety (surrogate) measures;
• Adaptation of road-user behaviour when interacting with new technology;
• Evaluation of the impact of new technology, engineering or policy countermeasures on road safety.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
