Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent rapid advancements in biomaterials have led to notable progress in various branches of dentistry, including reconstructive dentistry, endodontics, and the maintenance and reconstruction of bone and dental hard tissue. This Special Issue aims to explore the diverse applications of biomaterials in dentistry, encompassing endodontics, reconstructive dentistry, and dental surgery. We seek to highlight the latest research and developments in the use of biomaterials for dental tissue and maxillofacial bone regeneration. Studies that examine the impact of biomaterials on biological processes, along with their unique properties, will also be considered. Despite ongoing challenges in regenerative medicine, particularly with bone and dental hard tissue defects,

modern materials in endodontics and endoprosthodontics have shown promise in regenerating dental tissues and extending the lifespan of teeth. Advances in material technology are enhancing the effectiveness of dental surgery and endodontics by preventing the resorption of alveolar bone and tooth tissue. Additionally, these technologies are being successfully applied in dental and bone reconstruction. This Special Issue will place special emphasis on new biomaterials for reconstructive dentistry, their clinical applications, and innovative methods for using nanomaterials in tooth and bone substitution. We invite the submission of original research articles and reviews.

Topics to be covered in this Special Issue include the following:

  • The utilization of biomaterials in endodontics, reconstructive dentistry, and dental surgery;
  • Physicochemical characteristics of dental biomaterials;
  • Analyses and evaluations of dental biomaterials;
  • Alterations and enhancements of dental biomaterials;
  • Antimicrobial features of dental biomaterials;
  • Assessment of biocompatibility in dental biomaterials;
  • Hydroxyapatite applications in biology and medicine;
  • Interactions of dental biomaterials with lasers and electromagnetic fields;
  • Evaluations of bone substitute materials;
  • Uses and applications of bone substitute materials;
  • Biocompatibility testing of bone substitute materials;
  • Physicochemical properties of bone substitute materials;
  • Nanoscale enhancements of bone substitute materials;
  • 3D printing techniques in bone regeneration;
  • Advanced titanium alloys for maxilla or mandible reconstructions;
  • Biomaterials in endodontic surgery;
  • Mechanical and biocompatibility properties of CAD/CAM restorative materials.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Functional Biomaterials is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
